Scarlet 2/3 Fixed Lens
Honestly, I'm not getting my hopes up just yet. Until I see the working model they will have at NAB then I really won't be convinced. Right now I'm holding off on a new camera because the HV30's are getting too cheap, it's almost scary. I bet Canon is coming out with something at NAB, another reason is that I can't really afford a new camera at the moment. If they pull through with the Scarlet, that's great. But until I see that working model then my guess is they won't really release it until late 2009.

Jim Jannard of RED insists that this is the schedule, even after the Change:
Nov 2008: Full details.
NAB April 2009: Shipping in volume, with production ramping up over time until...
Fall 2009: Every last person who wants one will have one in their hands.
So, if you are desperate you can call RED with a credit card and order it on the day it is released and probably see it sooner, but Fall 2009 is realistic for most people.
I still can't decide whether I want to go with RED and a top-heavy 3K RAW workflow, or if I just want a more traditional ProSumer cam with lots of features (Panasonic AG-HMC150) that I can run-and-gun or travel easily with.

Sorry to be so late to this party, but a post caught my eagle eye that needs addressing:
"Lack of funds for advanced research is also an hindrance to revolutionary products. "
Actually, I've studied innovation evolution for my 'day job' and the 'hindrance' to revolutionary products is rarely lack of funds. History of technology revolutions in the past 40 years have shown that the only hindrance if it can even be called that is actually convergence or as I like to put it- convergence synchronization. This refers to the fact that certain products stay in R&D until the correct moment arrives. That moment is usually a 'waiting' for one or more pieces of the puzzle to fall into place. Such events are not funds dependent but simply research results dependent. As simplt case in point: :Laptop computers could not have materialized until several component technologies had matured to the point that a relatively thin, foldable and carryable computer could become a reality. Companies that push the envelop and their fans, must often wait a decade or more for the finished product to hit the stores. I waited 10 painful years for Firewire protocol to actually materialize before getting into DV!
Hopefully Scarlet will not take as long to show 'her pretty face'
Scarlet will show her pretty face along with her big brother Epic on Nov. 13th. When we can physically have her should be known the same day. ( I hope).
Unless things have changed they aren't taking pre-orders. Jim remarked on how that was a good thing because of the changes so it's still probably true.
Funny you should pick those two, probably because they are both CF card cameras. However, both of those have work flow issues. Red is getting easier to work with, but the HMC150 can be moved to your computer quickly, but then takes a long time to decode.
Both cameras take substantial computer horsepower to edit reasonably so factor in a computer upgrade too unless you already have a beefy computer.
The problem with that is that all the people that ordered Reds still have not received them. (Not that a Red isn't worth waiting for.)
This is a whole new camera with new tooling requirements. People don't realize that it takes planning to set up a factory and execute an order for mass production. It's not like a Mom and Pop thing.
2 freaking days.
HaHA, I'm finding myself waiting for this announcement before I can commit to the 5D.
Especially since Jim slammed its skew problem. (but this also hints that he is not going the 35mm route) Hmm... The 5D looks damn tasty, but the scarlet is tempting too. Awe, what is a guy in Limbo to do? I'll know a little more in a few days.

The main issue with going RED, at least for me, is that i would have to also buying a brand new editing system that could actually handle that high quality of footage. Not to mention a bunch of hard drives.
less than 20 hours till announcement

that depends on your idea of cheap. it's like 300 for a terabyte, and if you planning on storing your footage you'll have to buy a few terabytes. Not a huge issue though. But people like me with a half way descent laptop would need a better system that could handle 3k and 4k. Mine barely handles 1080i. So that would be 3k for the scarlet and probably 2K for a good editing system. Still though, in comparison with a lot of things it's pretty cheap. I just need to find a way to win 25,000 or something.![]()

I'm willing to admit that, I too, am excited to hear what the announcement is going to be as far as Scarlet goes. Jim claims that nobody will be disappointed and that everybody will be amazed. If he's right, then that means we'll have a full 35mm sensor camera with full manual control that accepts interchangeable lenses and costs under the original MSRP of $3,000.
If any one of those 4 things isn't true, then Jim is completely wrong about nobody being disappointed, because basically that's just the $2500 MKII with full manual control. If it's going to take him 9 months to come up with a camera that doesn't offer much more than the MKII does right now, then whoop-de-doo. If this announcement is going to be as big as he claims it is, then it's going to include those four things plus a lot more.
My biggest fear is that it's going to be modular in the same way the R1 is modular. That is, that the price tag and the actual cost will differ by 100%. Sure, you can buy the imaging sensor module of the Scarlet for $3,000 but then you have to add a viewfinder, a propriatory RED lens, a RED hard drive capture system, a break out box for audio and on and on and on until you have a $10,000 camera. People seem to forget that the original excitement about the R1 was because it was a $17,500 camera, even though in so many practical ways, it's not.
We'll see what they offer in less than 24 hours. I'm expecting to be either completely amazed or totally disappointed, but probably nothing in between.
Well said David...couldn't agree more.

I'll fair man bet you 2 that you'll be disappointed then. But if not, (and if it all comes together in one package for 3000) I'll be damn happy myself. It just doesn't seem like Jim has hinted at ANY of what you want.
