To me the "no crop factor" is an insane thing to ask for in a mass market video camera, and i'm a professional focus puller mind you. Not even the red one has a full size sensor, neither does 35mm film. /matt

...although a bit more than 2/3" would indeed be nice, as would interchangeable lenses...
I don't think you understand the real comparison.
The scarlet produces a 3k image, but even they admit the actual resolution is only ~2.2k. Many people, perhaps most, will reduce that to a 2k image. The difference between a 2k image and a 1920 wide image is not really significant.
The fact that scarlet would do 120fps sustained is an advantage if you want to do slo-mo, otherwise it's not. More important is the scarlet will do other frame rates 23.97, 24, 29.97, etc that the 5D will not.
I don't know where you got the $6,000 price tag from. The 5D with a nice telephoto lens is $3,500 at B&H.
That leads to another Scarlet fault, the wimpy 8x telephoto, only going up to 80mm. The packaged 5D lens goes up to 105mm, so you're likely to need an extender with the Scarlet, but not the Canon, and you can slap a real telephoto on the canon if you want to do so.
They both use CF cards, but the Canon uses cheap type 1 and 2 cards, the Scarlet a specialized card that costs ten times as much because (if I remember the stat correctly it's a 300x faster memory.)
Then on top of that the Canon has better dof control (35mm adaptors cut resolution and light sensativity drastically). Since the Scarlet only has/had 2.8T (f2.6 maybe) lens, a 2/3" sensor it may not have much better DOF than the HV20 (which goes to f1.8).
Then the 5D (which can take f1.4 FAST lenses) and a vista vision size sensor seems to have truely outstanding low light capabilities without noise. The Red One has an ISO equivelent of 300-500, the 5D up to 26500! That's just crazy light sensitivity.
Production photos during the shoot are a great publicity asset, and the 5D wins there hands down. Not even close. The nearly one megapixel LCD is a great help too.
The Canon compression format sort of hides the data rate. Because that format is much more efficient than that used by the HV20 the amount of detail in the files can be huge.
I hope that explains the excitement. The fps issue is the only one that makes me hesitate on the 5D now, and that Canon hasn't announced their new camcorder lineup. We live in interesting times, which could be a blessing or a curse.
The real biggie is, you can buy the Canon 5D now (November.)
Question for anybody...but in terms of Scarlet's supposed upcoming new features....would you rather a bigger sensor with a fixed lens (and more zoom)... or keeping the sensor size and adding the option for interchangeable lens?

True, but perhaps they will develop AF that is appropriate for video application. EF lenses with USM motors focuses extremely fast, they just need to modify the way the motor is controlled to allow a smoother focus for their video cameras.
Or they will keep improving the noise characteristics of their sensors so that we can shoot at higher apertures and thus mitigate the shallow DOF problem for times when we don't need it.
Yes it does. Thanks.
I didn't understand that the sensor is FREAKING HUGE in the MkII. :-)
I have also now seen the sample video from that NY photographer. Nasty 30p video look, but otherwise shockingly beautiful footage.
So, for those who really love shallow DOF and shooting in low light, the MkII beats even the Red One in some situations.
I hope they add 24p.

Is 30p really THAT different looking than 24? I do shoot at 24 "HV20" but I'm just asking.
24p can be easily and losslessly converted to 60i, 50i, 25p, even 30p, while 30p can't really be converted to anything except 60i without throwing away frames or using heavy image processing. that's the dealbreaker for me, not the look. what's a guy who makes movies for pal tv/dvd and the big screen gonna do with 30p?
/matt
Exactly, you can't just blend fields or drop frames to convert 30p to 24p. The only software that seems to do a good job seems to have a motion tracking component in order to figure out where the object should be in that frame, because neither of the frames on each side will have the moving object in the right place.
It can be done, but it's very time consuming.
On the other hand, if the hardware will work at 30p, recording at 24p is actually slower so the hardware may not be the limitation. If that happens to be the case a firmware change may work. (As long as there's nothing like a crystal controlling the speed.)
I hope, I hope, I hope.
Braceface, the speed of movement is a big change. Most people notice something is different between film and video, even if they don't know what.

Announced last night on reduser.net. "We will announce the new Epic and Scarlet programs on Nov. 13th". -
We will soon know more. I'm excited!
This is getting to be real funny. I'm glad they are coming out with an announcement on the 13th. Do you think Canon will respond with a 24p firmware update for their D5 MII? Would it even matter?

LOL, Ian.
And thanks 94strings....please update this thread when the news breaks.
Can't wait to hear from them, although, i thought less of it at first, but the canon camera is growing on me, footage from it looks great. RED better do something awesome.
Those who are thinking of splurging on the 5d may want to wait:

*Edit* Here's a quote:
If you believed then, I hope you will believe now when I tell you that our announcement will be something... :-)

JJ is an HV user? I dont feel so bad about using this camera any more! Looking forward to the update on "Scarlet will have the most bad ass glass lens ever built into a hand held camera. Period."![]()

I do find it rather funny that the purpose of this announcement is to announce that there will be an announcement on the 13th!![]()

Jim at reduser.net has given us a partial render to speculate over. There is lots of speculation coming from the Epic/Scarlet hopefulls.
