Default JES Deinterlacer "cannot detect cadence/Error #5017"

Hey HV20'ers - first post and while I'd hope I'd find the answer in existing threads - doesn't seem to be the case.

Every clip I've logged in FCP 5.04 and then tried to deinterlace with JES deinterlacer gets the same result "cannot detect cadence/Error #5017"

Any idea on what could cause this? The obvious error that I can account for is that I reused tape - which generally I don't do, but this was spur of the moment footage and I plopped in the nearest hdv cassette that was of little importance. Will reusing tape affect the timecode readout or kill the chances of automatically detecting cadence?

I noticed another workflow Eugenia provided using terminal - and heard vague references to doing so in Cinema tools, but obviously I'd want to save myself some grief before going either route and take the easy way out.

Wait. Are you trying to de-interlace, OR remove pulldown? Because these two things are not the same thing. Yes, there is de-interlacing when removing pulldown, but that's a by product of the main action.

If you are trying to remove pulldown, what kind of MOV format are you feeding JES?

Also read here, google is your friend.

Wow thanks for the speedy reply. Sorry for the confusion i'm trying to remove pulldown for hv20 60i -> 24p. In this case I imported using FCP and made absolutely no changes to the footage.

Thanks for the links - those were the ones I originally tried to follow just got hung up at the cadence portion. I even strayed aside and tried the "detect breaks" and thought "hallelujah its working" when I saw the little reference pane - but alas it still came with the same error with that option selected.

Thanks again your advice is more than appreciated

This doesn't tell us what format FCP saved as though. It could be m2t, it could be prores, or AIC. Anyways, try more than one PF24 clips (not 60i-recorded clips) and check if JES still can't find the cadence. Also, try the suggestions in the links above.

Oh ok, my fault. For this workflow then which of the aforementioned codecs is suggested? Its certainly not M2t - I doubt its prores or AIC as well.

Fcp saves unmodified mpeg2 wrapped in a mov container with the "hdv codec". It should definitely work.

Thanks for that gem mattias - yea I'm re-checking my easy setup settings - I noticed it was still defaulting to my old sony hdv presets, so that could be attributing to the problem.
