My DIY 35mm adapter rig

Hello everyone, I've finished my DIY project and here are some pictures:

The 35mm adapter. Basically it's just a cheap extension tube for Nikon F-mount with Daniel's vibrating GG holder inside of it.


The Canon EE-A, GG holder, vibrating motor and the power cables.


The parts I used to connect the adapter and my HV20, from left to right:
Nikon BR3 adapter ring, 52mm male-male ring, 43mm-52mm ring.


With Nikon 85mm F2.0 lens, my DIY rail and follow focus

Nice rig! What kind of legs are that on your tripod? It looks like the Velbon DV-7000 but the leveler is on the shoulder of one of the legs. My DV-7000 has its leveler atop the head and the only way to see it is to tilt forward or back.

eric, could you please explain to me how the gg holder vibrates?

The reason I ask is because Daniel sells two gg holder kits.

The 57 version looks like this:


and the 57x version looks like this:


I see how the 57x version vibrates, because it is support by 3 thin support rods that allow it to move.

The 57 version (the one you are using) does not have these support rods, which is why I dont understand how you can get movement from the vibrating motor.

Care to elaborate?

It's model no. is Velbon D-700. I bought it a long time ago and I'm not sure if they're still making it.

How Did U Make The Rail System? What Did You Use?

The 16mm x 350mm rod was made of stainless steel which I got for about $3 each. And I specified the sizes of the aluminum blocks to the workshop and ordered them all for about $25. I don't have the skill or equipment for CNC stuff, just a desk-top drill and some hand tools. All I did was measuring and drill some holes on them and use screws to piece them together.

what follow focus is that and how much was it?

It's my DIY follow focus, though most of the parts were directly purchased and used as is. I ordered the L-gearbox and the small gear from one vendor making industrial instruments. I was going to order the lens gear rings from Redrock until I saw this:

I bought them instead. They're cheaper and they worked. The follow focus cost me about $150.

Around $150, most for the EE-A and Daniel's GG-holder. The battery box was not attached in the pictures. You can see that I used a 3.5mm mono audio jack for connecting the power in the first picture.

Well, I'm not sure if I should give away Daniel's design here, but I can tell you it's brilliant and it works very well. Maybe you should talk to Daniel if you still have concerns.

That's cool, but where can I order one? Everywhere I look ordering seems to be meant for companies buying great quantities... I just want a single one.
Also, I live in Norway, so my hardware stores is not likely to have them...

Could you post any detail plans you have on your rig? I really want to build this one but it would help to have a complete part list. This is the most streamlined and simplest rig I have seen on this forum. Great job. I am getting the parts I need for the DOF adapter that you built.

Sorry for the late reply.
I didn't really have a plan when I started to build it. Apart from the DOF adapter and the follow focus, it's just 2 stainless-steel rods and some aluminum blocks/plates screwed together. I'll post some more pics of the rail when I have chance.

This thing produces some fine images for not having an achromat. It's intriguing. If you want to share it, I would sure like to know what your distance is between the HV20 lens and the GG.

And also, could you post a screen grab of the original un-anti-vignetted footage? If it's good enough to leave the achromat out of the equation, it would make me glad.

Digging up the dead here. I'm looking to do something similar to my hv30 for a side project. I found the 6 gear dials online and I see the L-box but, where dig the knob and silver gear (attached to the L-box) come from?
Also I'm looking to build my own camera rig to support everything what are the size of the rails or does anyone have any specs for something similar?

The standard rail size is 15mm, spaced 60mm on center (the gears are 32 pitch .8 mod). No clue about the rest, though someone on Team HVFF may have suggestions about the handle.
