Can't transfer to PC.

Last time I tried to transer from my HV20 to my XP in Pinnacle, it worked perfectly. Now, it does not work at all. I bought a new firewire cable (4/6) and tried. Nope. I tried at another computer. Nope. It did not work. Can the firewire-port of the HV20 have been destroyed?

Hi,
if it worked with one cable, then the new one may be faulty.
I can not imagine that you can 'destroy' your FW-port on the camera
unless you forced the connector's to do damage.

On the contrary, this board is littered with posts about people frying their Firewire ports. Quite a few people suggest you should never connect the FW cable to the camera unless it and the computer are powered off. The problem seems to be power coming through the 6 pin connector.

Try to think of your camcorder as a hard-drive. Some are hot swappable, and some are not. Well the camcorder is NOT Hotswappable. It needs to be connected before powering up the computer, or the firewire port can get fried. A good rule of thumb is to always connect the camcorder before powering up your computer. It saves a lot of heartache.

It can be any of the three items that was fired, the unit of the cam, the cable or the unit of the pc. Try out which one it is, by testing on another computer and having a spare cable available.

I tried to connect it with the old cable, but it did not work.
I tried to connect it to another computer again, but it did not work either, nor with the new or the old cable.
I tried to connect the camera before starting the PC, but that did not work.

I fear that it is the camera that is faulty. If so, is it possible to repair the firewire-port on the camera, or do I have to get a new one?

Repair has been reported here befor. So that is an option. Bute before that, make sure the other pc works with a FW cable and another camera. Only than do you know for certain, that your camera is the trouble maker.
