I was wondering this myself as I saw the 100 dollar difference on the HV40. However, based on some complaint boards/sites, there were some issues that implied bait and switch. I'm not sure how accurate this is as its being featured on this thread.

    Default A good deal?

    Hi everyone!

Was hoping to get your opinions on a deal a local guy is offering:

    - HV30
    - "near mint" condition -- less than 5 hours use
    - extended warranty 3 years
    - carry case
    - charger/battery/remote/manual

    $700

    What are your opinions?

    Thanks!

Well, B&H and Amazon are both down to $716.00 on a new HV40.

That wouldn't get you the 3 yr. warranty or the case, of course.

Keep in mind that HV30's were well under $600.00 around Christmas last year so I guess it depends on how big a hurry you're in.

Keep looking for used units for sale that are well taken care of. These are the prices I came up with when I was pricing units. Decide what you want to get from the camera.

If you do not need 30P, go with the HV20 to get started because these cameras are just about all the same. Also, alot of the used cameras come with extras that will save you $$$. I am still amazed when I locate footage from the HV20 at the quality.

Market in the last 2 months:

    HV20 - $320 - $400 (used, with extras)
    HV30 - $500 - $550 (refurb, used with extras)
    HV40 - $720.00 (new)

The forum here is a good spot, Amazon as well, or if you find someone with a good rating, you can trust Ebay.

    Hey everyone,

Thanks for all the perspective so far! I will definitely keep my eyes peeled.

It's just that I want the camera for some documentaries I'm looking to shoot -- so, as for the 30p, I'm not sure. 30p is just necessary for fast-moving activities, correct? Like panning quickly or sports?

I will keep my eyes peeled on the forum, amazon (i'm not sure if they ship to Canada), and ebay.ca.

Thanks again for any and all info!

    PEACE!

Also got the Adobe Master Collection so I can edit in Premiere Pro... I know, I'm sure there are 100 opinions out there about the best editor... but work paid for all of it... so who's gonna complain?
I've seen this offer and seems to be very good. does this camera register in PAL format ?

Default B&H lowers price for HV40 LEGRIA but not for VIXIA

FWIW: I bought my HV40 LEGRIA in February. Much has happened since, price-wise - if my notes from back then are correct...

    B&H:
    Feb. 2011: VIXIA 649 USD ; LEGRIA 1,049 USD
    Aug. 2011: VIXIA 649 USD ; LEGRIA 749 USD

MediaMarkt, Europe (German chain, present in many countries now)
    Feb. 2011: LEGRIA 1,049 EUR
    Aug. 2011: LEGRIA 999 EUR
Canon HV40 LEGRIA | Raynox 0.66x HD wide angle converter | Cavision LH-77 hood | Røde SVM | Tecpro "Fillini" 24 LED video light

Mediamarkt has never been known to be cheap beyond some limited sales items. Back in Germany, I got the same, if not a better, deal from my small-town, family-owned electronics store... and terrific service("warranty? Screw that! You bought that thing from me, I'll fix it for you" compared to "oh, you have to contact the distributor") to boot.
