Default Some DV some HDV...which is which

My wife and I recently had a baby and made an anouncement video. Now, if you look at the larger version you will be able to tell, but view the smaller flash version and tell me where I switched to HDV.

Click on the link "John Matthew". Just look at the over all tonal and color quality of the filming, see if you can tell where I switched to the HD camera from the semi pro camera, and let me know what you think.

Hey John, I thought the entire footage was very good, was that taken by a HV20? You have a good looking family to be proud of that's for sure. Who sang that song....that definitely fit the footage ...it was easy to watch and listen to...I guess smooth would be a better word. Great job.

You really can't tell especially at that size. It's a little difficult to distinguish the difference.

By the way...nice vids. Especially the John Mathew video. Music choice was spot on. Congrats. And as Jake mentioned "good looking family."

    Thanks for the compliments.

Okay then...I thought this was a good example to show how the HV20 treats darks and lights on cine mode. A good portion of the video was shot with the Canon GL2. From the rocking chair bit and on, was shot with the HV20.

Pay particular attention to the darks in the GL2 portion. It took a great amount of effort to get the darks I wanted without darkening everything...even then the darks are still pretty weak (I just hink there is no punch to it). Comparatively, all I did was add an RGB filter to the HV20 portion and the darks and lights are so much better with very little effort.

    Thanks!

My wife is pretty good with still video (photography) so after she did a photo shoot of the little guy, I took some video. It was just a plain black piece of cloth. It was a challenge making sure to only get black cloth in the background and nothing else.

It was late afternoon so the natural light came into the room and bounced off the walls nicely. I made sure not to underexpose so in post I could bring down the darks without making the baby dark. That way the folds of the cloth blend in and are not as aparent...it looks flatter...does that make sense?

Wow...beautiful site,..and beautiful video you have there! Good editing too. Can you tell us what do you use to convert to flv? Maybe a little info for the workflow? I am very new with HV20 and converting to flv. So far I use Final Cut Express with Sorenson Spark conversion,..but the quality is not good at all. It also took forever to do the conversion. I tried a 1 minute video, and it took almost 10 minutes to do the conversion.

    What did I do wrong?

    Appreciate any help.

    Thanks.

    Thanks for the compliment...very kind.

I actually just use the flash 8 video encoder that comes with the program. I set it to high and then in the custom settings I set size I want and put encoding on "on2 vp6". I always get a good quality video and reasonable size for loading times.

    Flash 8 video question:

I love the compression too...my question is what do you have to do to be able to make the video watchable on the net. What I'm doing is encoding the file with the skins from a source file on my computer...which plays great on my computer but when I publish the .swf to an internet site the video doesn't show up. I tried publishing the source file to the webserver but that didn't do any good.

Are you deploying the video via progressive download? Flash streaming service? Communication server? Embedding it?

And then are you publishing just the .swf or the .flv or the source video?

    Thanks?

    jondabach,

Here is what I do for videos on my site. I like to use flash for video because most browsers either have the flash player or prompt you to load it so you can view flash sites. I have done some small scale studies and have found that folks have less trouble viewing a flash video than any other single file type on the internet...so it is very usable across all platforms.

If you have Flash, then it comes with the Video Encoder. I open that up and drag my mov file into it. I go into the settings, then show advanced settings, and put the dimensions that I want. Then under the custom pull down I select Flash 8 high quality and on the video codec choose On2VP6. Then I hit okay
    and start queue.

So you get a high quality .flv file at a pretty small size. I have made my own player for it which is a .swf put into an html doc. If you want, I can send you the basic .fla file I use...I like to use xml as well so it can be changed dynamically.

There is also the free FlowPlayer if you donīt want to build buttons to control the video.

Just saw your movie of little John. I loved it. Very very good work. I am a grandfather of 6. I have been making movies for 55 years and so I think I know a good film-maker when I see one. Great Job! Roger

    Default WOW!

John, that is some fantastic stuff.
I have bookmarked this page so that I can go back to get some ideas on how I can compose my videos. Great stuff!

BTW, I am a new owner of the hv20. Of the videos posted, which ones are shot using 24p?

    Thanks
