Cine Mode Aperture Hack
Hello,
Just got my HV20 today and I have a question for you all.
Although TV Mode allows the control of the shutter I do not enjoy the color/gamma as much as in cine mode.
I have a 35mm adapter on the way and I would prefer to shoot in cine mode at all times. However if that means I cannot control the exposure settings like shutter or gain I will just suck it up and go TV Mode.
During my toying around with the camera I noticed that if you lock the exposure in Cine Mode on a bright source, your shutter seems to remain fixed at 1/48th
I did this outside then went inside my home in a room with no windows and with the aperture locked on f1.8 1/48th the room was black and it appeared no gain was present.
If I moved the manual aperture forward the aperture stayed wide open and the shutter slowed to 1/40th and the shutter slowed with each additional point down to a 1/24 at this point I believe it begins to add gain to the image to compensate.
Does anyone know if cine mode bypasses gain altogether until the 1/24th shutter is exceeded in locked aperture mode?
It seems that no matter how dark if I lock my aperture on a bright subject first the shutter speed will remain fixed at 1/48th unless I go above f1.8.
Essentially it is the same system as TV Mode except instead of compensating with gain above the maximum 1.8 aperture, Cine Mode compensates with shutter.
The only problem with this system is I am not sure if or when gain comes in at all, but I am assuming after the 1/24 mark.
I hooked my camera up to my plasma and cine mode seemed as gainless with a locked aperture as TV Mode.
Does anyone know if gain is present in cine mode with a locked aperture under the 1/24th shutter like I am suspecting?
If this is the case I can't seem to figure out why I have read posts of people saying they can't control the shutter in cine mode and don't like 1/24th speed footage.
If you lock the aperture it functions the same as TV Mode. As long as you want a 1/48th shutter!
This is what I am being led to believe by my tests. Does anyone else have any experience with this and know any better on the subject.
I prefer cine mode for imaging, but I want zero gain and a 1/48th shutter. I think this is possible, but is the HV20 deceiving me?
Thanks,
Walterson

You can get 0db gain in cinemode just as you did it. When increasing the exposure slider you will add gain one click after the 1.8 and 1/24 mark.

Thanks for the confirmation I did a search but could not find anything that answered this exactly. It is always a challenge to search forums for me for some reason.
Thanks, I am looking forward to shooting once I get my tapes in the mail.
