If you are using the battery that came with the camera, then your battery life is only going to last about 30-40 mins on HDV. HV20 battery compatible with Rebel
I've read all three pages of this thread trying to confirm which battery is compatible both with the HV20 and the Rebel XT digital camera. I plan to buy a HV20 and my daughter has a Rebel XT. We are going on a rescue mission in Ghana next month to rescue trafficked children and I want to bring enough batteries for both of us. If we need to use different batteries, that's fine. But if we are able to use the same model battery to increase our flexibility since we may have limited power for three days when we are in remote villages, I want to find out if there is a Canon battery that both the HV20 and Rebel XT can use. Thank you in advance for your assistance. I live in the U.S. so I will probably be shopping at Amazon or B&H.

NB-2LH is the only one that are compatible.
The battery doesn't seem to last long with HV20. You should order some other batteries for HV20 such as BP-2L12, BP-2L14, BP-2L18 or BP-2L24. Good thing is you can share the same charger.
Thanks Taky! I read on this forum that the larger the number after the L in the battery model number, the larger the capacity (and the longer it takes to charge the battery). Since power may not be reliable during the 3 days we'll be in villages, I may get another battery charger so I can charge up more than one battery at a time.
This forum is great and helped confirm my decision to buy the HV20. It's more camera than my meager knowledge base but I look forward to learning how to edit and produce DVDs of the Ghana project for local schools.

Lori, I'm glad you found useful information in this site. I myself was just like that before I acquired HV20 as my first HD cam. I learned a lot from this site too.

I'm just about to place my order on Amazon for the HV20. I'm still reading threads on batteries, tripods, mini DV tapes and head cleaners. I just realized that maybe one reason why my Sony TRV38 (second camcorder I owned, first was a Nikon) isn't working after only TWO years and minimal use, is maybe the head needs cleaning! So I'm buying a Sony head cleaner to see if that's why the video looks all scrambled but the audio works fine. I'm still buying the HV20 for the trip to Ghana. I will only have a couple weeks to figure out the basic commands to shoot footage though....
I will be happy to share any tips, footage etc. once I feel like I can contribute something. I'm learning a lot here but getting nothing else done because I'm spending so much time reading posts!

As far as batteries overheating OEM or 3rd party will short in your bag if the contacts are shorted by a wire or coins.

About battery's.... i'm searching a good spare HV20 battery. The most times we filming for a couple of hours.. With the standard Canon battery i can film about approx. 1.2 hours with the display on and then it is empty. Now i'm finding the "Canon BP 950G Li-Ion 5200 mAh" battery. http://www.shops.nl/product/78178/

the BP-9xx series is for the older brothers like GL1, GL2, XH-A1 and XL2 cams. It won't fit to HV20. The biggest battery for HV20 is so far is the BP-2L24. Check out this thread.

Canon response is a no-go
Included with the Canon HV20 is a BP-2L13 battery pack.
I also own a Canon Powershot S50 which includes an NB-2L battery pack.
I have queried Canon product support, asking if these batteries could be used interchangeably between the two cameras. No response yet.
Also, could the CB-2LT battery charger (that was included with the S50 Powershot) be used to charge the HV20s BP-2L13 battery pack?
Both batteries are are 7.4V, configured with the same slide grooves and contacts, although the BP-2L13 (HV20) is deeper since it is a 1200mAh battery (NB-2L is 570mAh).
The S50 Powershot's battery would make a great spare battery for the HV20.

Bought a 1900mah battery on ebay. Was about $15 with a charger. The battery charged just fine, but it measures 8.4V when full (should be 7.4V). Is this a showstopper? Is there a chance I could damage the camera because of the extra volt?
Edit: never mind, the stock battery also goes up to 8.4V when fully charged.

This is a question I am also interested in knowing. The 2400 mAh battery from BestBatt.com seems to be too large for the hV20 that I doubt that it might drop out.
There are BL-2L18 you can try.
I don't mind 2L-24's size. In fact, I wish there're even high capacity one available too
Do the numbers after the L indicate the mah. For example, 2L18 = 1800 and 2124 = 2400. I'm just confused, because bestbatt doesn't list mah from what I can see.
Also, Taky, have you found the 2124 to last twice as long as the standard canon battery included with the camera. I'm trying to find the most lasting time to cost battery. I don't care how many I have. For example, I'll take 4 1400mah ones over 2 2400mah ones if the 4 last longer all together...

OK. I've limited my battery choice down to 2 batteries...
The NB-2LH 1700mAh from Sterlingtek or the BP-2L18 1950mAh from Bestbatt.
Conveniently, the BP-2L18 is exactly twice the price of the NB-2LH. While the 2L18 only has 250mAh more than the 2LH, the battery is bigger and made for the HV20 rather than still cameras (like the 2LH).
Will the 2L18 last TWICE as long as the 2LH? I'll be happy to report back on the performance of whichever one I choose...

They arrived today but are about half the size of the original battery. They seem to work though. Do you think this might be a problem?
