Doesn't anyone find this long delay rather peculiar? Also, wasn't there a rumor that Canon was releasing the firmware hack in December? THIS December? Any news on that front?

If you read earlier in the thread, I called canon, and they have no plans of releasing the hv20 firmware...and why would they? It works fine, there's no bugs. A company like canon will only release the firmware if something is broken and needs to be fixed, this is not the case with the hv20.
ADMIN NOTE:
Listen up, _gl is now in charge of this thread and the firmware hack together with Cyclewriter.
Cyclewriter is the money-keeper, and _gl is in charge of the final decisions on what, where, when and how the firmware hack should be organized.
Naturally feedback is always welcome and it is still a group effort. Nothing has changed in that respect.
What has changed it that _gl now is in charge of making things happen, and this will hopefully speed things up, and get us the much desired HV30 FIRMWARE HACK.
Rock on....
Thanks Mal, happy to get something moving here.
Bear with me everyone, I'll post when things are good to roll.

Soultrape, did you get my PM?

hey, how are things going between tigs and Wiesel? this could be our great step towards this goal and aim
i should have posted earlier as i wanted to mention to tigs that he shoud record himself doing the flashing and etc so we could all supervise![]()
but thats really no problem, what he can do is hook up the HV30 to his TV where we will be able to view everything just like his LCD but on a bigger screencan it still happen?
Hello everyone, I have never posted here, but being a HV20 owner I have been reading the forum for quite some time.
While I do not have loads of time to spend on this I might be able to help somehow to do something on/with the firmware, as it's something I have done in the past, just not for thins kind of device.
As it seems some help could be appreciated here is my offer to cooperate to the project and spend some time on it, let me know if I can be of help.
Cheers,
Jollyroger
Received $20 from Devin Fox. Thanks for your contribution!![]()
If there's any sort of move forward I'll be happy to donate about $75 USD.
OK, I was waiting to hear from Soultrape but he seems to me MIA at the moment, so here's my plan:
Background:
Canon never released firmware for the HV20, but did for the HV30/IF10 (if this could be figured out then an HV20 hack is quite likely as it's nearly identical to the HV30). Hackers on the CHDK forum have already decrypted it, and found some intriguing contents that they want to play with further. (the CHDK project has already successfully hacked & vastly improved the firmware on many Canon still cameras, so these guys are our best bet). For this they need to experiment with modified versions.
However they reached an impasse - there is a version check, either in the firmware itself, or on the camera. This means that the only way to flash a modified firmware is to increase the version number on the one to flash - but then you can't flash the original firmware back (as that has an earlier version) = loss of warranty + the danger that you irreversibly 'brick' (kill) the camera with a bad modification.
None of the hackers have been willing to risk their own (expensive) cams, and who can blame them - but if nobody does, and nobody buys or donates a working or semi-working camera for them, nothing will happen - and that's exactly why progress has stalled for months now.
HV20.com member 'Soultrape' got us all fired up here with his enthusiasm & progress reports from the CHDK hackers, and started to collect donations from HV20.com members. The goals for the cash were never 100% clear, but one idea was to buy a camera for the hackers to play with. (the money has since been transferred to CycleWriter who has been accepting and looking after donations).
The Problem:
No cams have been donated (if you have an HV30/IF10, even one that is damaged, please step forward), and we haven't raised enough to buy a new, or even 2nd-hand cam (remember we need an HV30/IF10). Even if we had, if the first mod attempt bricks it, we've wasted a lot of money.
My Solution:
We pick a single known hacker who is already on the CHDK thread. We offer him and him alone a guaranteed repair if he bricks his camera through a modified firmware flash.
Best-case scenario: the first flew flashes succeed, and the hackers can find and eliminate the version check, and then get stuck in figuring out how everything works.
Worst-case: one of the first flashes bricks it. We pay for the repair and take it from there. A lot cheaper than buying & bricking a camera!
Safety:
I'd want to see a repair receipt from Canon, showing the reason for the camera failure and/or that they fixed it by flashing firmware. That's enough, everything else is paranoid and unworkable. We need to trust someone, so let's trust someone already known and with a track record on CHDK - I nominate Wiesel, and he's up for it as long as the repair is guaranteed from us.
For this to work, I need your help:
a) we need to know how much Canon Europe will charge for repair of a bad firmware.
b) we also need to know if Canon will repair a camera that has had the firmware tampered with (there's concern that they won't - but would they even check?).
Without this info we can't guarantee a repair.
Players:
Moi. CW (our donation trustee) is on board. We also have Mal's (forum owner) support now, as long as we do this by the book (which we will). Soultrape, you started this, let us know your thoughts.
If anyone sees a fatal flaw, let me know, but I see this as the best (and only) option to break the deadlock and get something moving. Yes there is some risk, and there are no guarantees - but that's the nature of the game.
Why Bother?
What could a firmware hack do? Well, one thing we all want to see is full manual control over the HV20/30/IF10's exposure settings (shutter speed, aperature and gain).
Other things that might be possible are PAL/NTSC switching, custom (or at least all possible) framerates, new compression bitrates, a histogram, and (for me personally) tightly syncing two cameras for stereoscopic shooting.
Of course once the firmware is hacked enough to add new features, the sky's the limit ...![]()

I had an idea earlier this morning that may or may not have been brought up yet. Has anyone thought about trying to get in touch with a Canon tech in New Jersey? I'm sure someone could bump into a repair tech going out to lunch who might be interested in helping upon hearing about a jackpot. This would also help in the event that one of the hackers involved in this project bricks their camera. The address I sent my defective camera to is:
100 Ridge Rd.

_gl,
this sounds like a great idea! thanks for taking the lead on this!
Excellent!
how do we check again what is the total balance?
also, as i mentioned before, how are things going between tigs and Wiesel? as tigs in the previous page mentioned he has a HV30 he wouldnt mind flashing, even though the screen might be at fault, he can always connect it up to a TV right?
CW?
I'll try to update the first post here with all those details (waiting on moderator priviliges from Mal).
Yep, if it's still booting and outputting, that would be great. Last I heard Wiesel was waiting to hear back from tigs.also, as i mentioned before, how are things going between tigs and Wiesel? as tigs in the previous page mentioned he has a HV30 he wouldnt mind flashing, even though the screen might be at fault, he can always connect it up to a TV right?

Unfortunately the buttons don't work, so a TV doesn't help. He can only control the VCR functions through firewire to use it as a playback device.
His insurance company now took the camera for assessment, but I proposed that he could donate it anyway if he ever gets it back and doesn't need it any more so we can do a hardware analysis.

which buttons precisely doesnt work? im sure someone here can do a simple repairment?
if u are reading this, donate $2!!! That's all i've donated. and, its the holidays!
For every donation God spares a puppy's life.

I donated $10. I think everybody should contribute to this. If this actually happens, this will be a Godsend for EVERY single indie filmaker who uses the HV series. I would offer my camera up for flashing or whatever, but if it did brick, it would take to long to get the camera back, seeing as I use my camera ALOT.
Everyone donate!!!
is there any specific amount we are trying to aim for? if so, what will the money be used for again?
