    Default Forbidden?

    Hi there

Yesterday afternoon, hv20.com stopped working for me. Everytime I tried to surf here, I would get a 403 error:

    Forbidden

You don't have permission to access / on this server.

Additionally, a 403 Forbidden error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.
For some reason I don't have any problem surfing here through proxy.org, which I'm using now to write this.

Is my work IP filtered or something?

    Thanks

I don't think there's anything wrong on your end. I experienced problems yesterday myself, and today the site is responding very slowly. Maybe there's a problem with site's server and/or provider. Maybe we (hv20 community) have "outgrown" our alloted resources (hardware, bandwidth, etc).

Mal received an email from the hosting company saying there were 8 IP addresses that they blocked because of the over connections. Guess what, I'm one of them. I got the same Forbidden error message. Mal is trying to get it resolved.

I can't connect either with my home computer. In the mean time, we can still surf hv20.com using other proxy servers.

I didn't know I was that bad. This kind of hurts in a way.

    I am another victim . . .
Now also using another (slow) proxy. How did I deserve to get on their picking-list? And how long will this problem last?
Please inform all victims per e-mail on the progress. Please.

    Situation:

    - I was informed by someone of a FORBIDDEN error (403) whilst traveling in Michigan
    - Received an email from host (Dreamhost) that they blocked 8 IP addresses because of too many connections to site (hv20.com)
    - Not received email addresses only IP addresses
    - From those eight blocked IP addresses, there were over 10000 connections which led to the site basically crawling to a halt (apparently; I wasn't around to see if true).
    - Have asked them to release one of the IP addresses again, but have not had a reply.
    - will ask them to release all other IP addresses also

    BUT:

    - may upgrade the software soon, to a new version. Could be (I guess) that there's a leak in there somewhere. That would make thew site go down for a few hours.
More on the upgrade maybe within the next three days...

Over what time period did all these connections occur? I don't believe I could have contributed to the slow-down as I'm not constantly refreshing the page. I wouldn't be surprised if my IPs inclusion in the list was a mistake.

Dreamhost had a pretty big billing mistake recently, wouldn't put this past them.

Pretty whack of Dreamhost to do this.

Sorry for all the trouble it's causing.

I've tried to match blocked IP addresses with users, and have now requested a further 3 be unblocked, including everyone in this thread. (Taky, your IP is now already unblocked).

What a pain....let's hope this doesn't happen again, or like someone mentioned; maybe we need our own dedicated server....

    jackinthebox,
according to Dreamhost, your IP address accounted for 1070 connections in that day (Feb 19th).

That's a pretty good number, I doubt I was able to cause all that by myself during a day my boss was in the office. Maybe there are some other hv20 fans in my office...

Okay the three further IP addresses are now also unblocked.
Everyone in this thread who mentioned they couldn't access hv20.com site should nbow be fine.

There's 4 more that I can't match to a user, and they remain blocked.

All better here too now - was blocked the last two days.

    Cheers,
    David.

Thank you for your effort. I am alive again!
I guess that you were able to match my name to one of the 8 IP's because I managed to contact another user and have him signal an SOS to you. If the others were not so lucky that they had the e-mail address of someone els on the forum, they were not able to contact a mod. Another reason to enable mass- e-mail in your update.

Well, I hardly ever read nor reply to PMs, so if they post in this thread I'll react, if a PM was sent, they mey not be so lucky....

But than, how on earth could a "victim" get in contact with you, in order to tell you, that he was forbidden??? The only method I could think of, was by having someone else send you and Taky a PM. And to my surprise no reaction, whatsoever. Sorry to sound disapointed.

Yes, Jo, everyone who contacted us got their issues resolved.

It was an unfortunate situation, and it's possible that some thre or four legit users are now forbidden to access hv20.com.
Unfortunately it's about all I can do for now.

Once I have upgraded to the new version, I will ask the host to release the remaining four IPs.

I'm not a very good moderator/administrator of this forum, and don't spend as much time as I ought to. Sometimes I even think the effort that I afford the forum is too much for my schedule.
If it weren't for all the moderators who do what they do, this site would of collapsed ages ago.

In fact, Taky, any chance you would join status of admin once the new update is done? But be warned; it's more work, and not very rewarding!

Mal, I don't mind joining to be the admin. I love this forum.

How can you have 10,000 connections between 8 users?

That's an average of 1,250 connections per pc.

Either someone has their facts wrong or you guys need to check for viruses / spyware as the only way I can see you having that many connections is if your pc's were unknowingly being used in a DOS (Denial of Service) attack.
