Tips for authoring in Ulead VideoStudio

Here are three tips for authoring HD DVD in Ulead VideoStudio 11. (I capture and edit in Vegas Pro 8, render out to m2t using the 1080i template. Vegas smart-renders, so the video that isn't edited or effects added is not re-rendered, thereby keeping the original video quality. I'm authoring 1080i media assets to standard DVDR)

1. VideoStudio will not re-render compliant files when you author, but ONLY if you import the files directly into the "share" submodule in the VideoStudio Editor module. If you put your media on the VideoStudio Editor timeline and author from there, VideoStudio will re-render your media even if they are compliant.

2. If the "insert chapter" buttons are greyed out and the jog bar is not appearing, download and install the latest DirectX update.

3. Your DVDR media quality is much more important with HD than SD (I think because of the higher bitrates). I did a test burn to Ritek budget media (which has always worked fine for me for SD) and got audio dropouts and video stuttering. Burning the same .iso (I author to an .iso image and burn with Nero) file to premium Taio Yuden media resulted in perfect playback.

You say not to put the vegas file in the timeline. What we should do then is click on share, then create disk, then chose HD DVD, then insert video file?

That's what I do to create my Hd-DVD disks but I also use the VS11+ to edit. Another alternative is to create the file in AVCHD and do the same procedure to create a AVCHD disk. Since the AVC is much more efficient, you can store about 1 hour of high def material on a single DVD media.

That's it. (Of course, you can capture to VideoStudio, and edit in VS, nothing wrong with that. I just prefer to edit in Vegas because that's what I've been using for years with SD, so I'm used to it).

Thanks nolonemo. I am trying your suggestion. I will let you know how it goes later on tonight. I don't know why Ulead will render compliant video if you put the video in the timeline as opposed to following your suggestions. I am glad you figured that out.

Actually, credit goes to 4eyes, over on the Vegas forum on the Sony website. But the issues were driving me nuts, and I figured I might be able to spare someone here some torn hair....

I tried the Ulead workaround and it worked, but on the DVD-R there was no sound. The video looked great, but no sound. Probably some setting on my end. I will have to investigate further.

The sound issue was on my end. I had to set sound as bitstream on my toshiba high def player.

Is that mpeg-2 with the 1080i template. I have Vegas Platinum, thats the closes thing I can find
