    Default An Eternity Editing/Rendering

    Hi,

Those of you who have seen my HV20 clips on Vimeo ( vimeo.com/f7sound ) may know that i'm doing HD editing on a Powerbook G4, 1.5 GHz (w/external 7200 drive). It's brutally slow and iMovie05 crashes a lot under the burden of all that HD data.

OK, so, I'm considering an upgrade. Mac Pro is not in the budget, but iMac/MacBook (pro - possibly) are. But, I'm definitely waiting until after MacWorld for any updated Macs.

So, my question is... What kind of speed (and stability) improvement will I see by going to a C2D machine and Final Cut Express 4? Have any of you made a similar jump... details please.

    Thanks in advance.

I can't give you any "details"....but by God, if you can afford it, upgrade!!!
I edit my stuff on a 2.16 Core 2 Duo 24 inch iMac with 2 gigs of RAM, and I have no complaints. Everything is pretty damn fast and smooth.

Going from a 1.5 G4 to a new iMac, you will definitely see a big improvement, you will be very happy, and it will be worth it, no doubt.
Between the iMac and the MacBook (I have both) I would go with the iMac, simply for the screen space.
But then we get into the whole "portable/not portable" dilemma...so, that's up to you.
Whatever you do, get as much RAM as you can afford.

And yes, you are smart to wait until after MacWorld....you never know what Stevie's gonna pull outta his change pocket.
