Can someone recommend a good program for editing HD video, preferably for +-$100? I've read reviews for products such as Pinnacle Studio v11, and 23 out of 63 reviews rate it one out of five stars! I have no clue what to buy...
Thank you.

Hello, please read the FAQ:

There's links to discussions to NLEs, and their minimum requirements to edit HDV footage from the HV20.
If you only want bare bones editing and you have windows XP; and if you don;t have Windows Movie Maker installed, (It;s free) find it on the Windows web site and install it.
Works for all those that only want to copy from camera straight to DVD; or you can do all the basic editing.
You must lock your camera in its DV mode when downloading, ( part of the program thats installed in the HV-20).
Ive used this program a lot and its great for simple programming.
The DVD;s that this program produces look fine on your HD flat screen.

Theres another program in Windows XP called Power Producer, also free; will also do simple programming and copy the HV-20 to DVDs. Ive also used this. You must also lock your camera in DV mode when downloading.

Can you produce an HD video on a regular DVD with this Sony software? Can you at least make an HD DVD folder with Vegas? It says you can edit in HD, but what about outputting HD?
I've tried Pinnacle Studio 11 Ultimate and strongly advise anyone from buying it. It ultimately corrupted two of my computers to the point of needing to reinstall the OS. It would create an HD DVD on a DVD disc but would crash routinely when using the file browser for saving or opening projects.
Vegas PRO can create Blu-Ray on DVDs. Platinum can't do that yet. Sony does not support HD-DVD.
Vegas will produce the video & audio streams you need to author HD-DVD to a regular DVD, but will not do the authoring.
ULead Movie Factory 6 Plus will let you author HD-DVD to a regular DVD, and AFAIK lets you do some editing too (but nothing as fancy as what you can do in Vegas). It's $80.
Pinnacle has had a terrible reputation for bugginess for as long as I can remember, you couldn't pay me to get me to put it on my computer. Just my opinion.

Studio 11+ is fantastic!!! Provided its loaded properly on to a new(ish) spec computer and ALL the loading instructions are followed. Delete all the older versions and use RegDelete to clear the registers.
I have used Studio 11 since August with great success and have had to reload once after a virus got in the computer.
I would recomment Studio 11+ to anybody wanting a simple NLE with a reasonable number of "bell & whistles" to make it very useful.
I've been using Studio since version 7, and long ago learned to steer clear of new "X.0" upgrades. I think version 10 was actually version 10.8 before I decided to chance it and it was still a right pain to install! With no support for 24p in Studio, I have just about resigned myself to switching to Vegas.
Thought of emigrating to Europe? With no support for 24p in Studio, I have just about resigned myself to switching to Vegas.
Just my two cents:
Being new to video camera and video editing software, I chose to go with the low cost alternative of Studio 11 Ultimate.
It seems to support the simple features you are looking for, and I have been able (with some help from support and the forum) to burn HD DVD content to regular DVDs.
Their support has been very responsive and helpful for me (so far).
I downloaded a trial of Vegas 8 and it is much more complicated and I assume feature rich. It is really overwhelming for a newbie. It might be something I can work up to as I continue to edit video and want to broaden my horizons.

Are you implying that you can output a true 25p progressive project from Studio? Because I've just had a reply from their customer support which states the US version can only export interlaced:
QUOTE:
"But for the output, you can generate a 60i format video rather than a full 24p video."
You must lock your camera in its DV mode when downloading,
Can someone explain this hdv/dv, dv locked mode
thanks
