all your programs are taking up this space. look through your hard drive at all your files.

Are you sure its not your programs??
I have a MacBook Pro with 100GIGs and
CS3 and FCSP take up 75 Gigs of it.

I just use an external firewire drive to capture and edit.

Yes, you can capture directly to the external drive.

And do you leave your Mac on overnight?

"OS X does its own cleanup operations every now and then, getting rid of old temporary files and other junk. Unfortunately, these cleanup routines are scheduled in the middle of the night, so it won't run if your Mac isn't turned on then. " (Fixed in Tiger)

Also, check out this program...it'll tell you exactly how much space each folder is taking up and such...you can go through your whole computer quickly and see what's taking up what.

Capture to a firewire external, not USB.

That's good advice. You might also want to try something like Onyx (go to www.macupdate.com and just do a search for Onyx for the latest version). Onyx is free and will get rid of lots of junk files, remove cached files which are no longer required and generally help to clean and optimize your drive. There are other applications like Tiger Cache Cleaner, which is shareware, but I've used Onyx for years and never had a problem with it.

The programs themselves probably aren't taking up that much space—but tutorials, templates, and other (non-crucial) program resources can eat up a lot. I think FCS2, for example, only needs about 8 gigs for the associated programs. But if you do the full install (with the additional resources mentioned above), you'll need something like 56 gigs.

The installer will allow you to do a custom install to just get the necessary program files; you can then do an install of the additional program resources to an external hard drive if you think you need them. (I haven't tried this out, btw, just noticed this in the instructions for FCS2.)

Onyx, as joemit mentioned, is another good way to track down what's pigging all your HD space. I occasionally find large scrap files from video and audio projects that I no longer need but forgot to delete.

thanks guys! This helped a ton. i downloaded both programs. i recovered about another 15-17 gigs of free space. im still goin to go back and delete some more stuff later.

When i ran the maintnence program it said my start up disk needed to be repaired. how do i repair that?
