    Default Question for vegas studio 8 preminum

    When I capture, the capture works fine; but when I save the same capture to my hard drive, then try to retreve it or play it; my computer pops up a ( does not read this codec) and won;t play it.
    I realy like this program but after my 30 day trial runs out, if I don;t get this sorted out Ill go with something else.
    I know there are others useing this program so I know it;s useable for the HV 20.
    help me out guys (gals).
    thanks for any help

    Sounds like you're just trying to play the .m2t stream files rather than a rendered video from a Vegas project. I use Media Player Classic to play these. Get it here (XP and ME versions available), then associate .m2t file types with MPC.

    I have locked the camera in DV mode; maybe I;ll try in the HDV/DV mode.
    I;m totaly stumped; I hate to give up on this program; as I realy like it.
    I just hate to spend $100 on a program I can;t make work.

    What is the file type you're trying to play (what are the last three characters in the filename)?

    I was just thinking---maybe I;ve got one of the settings in my camera wrong;
    just an idea, is there anything that I need to set on the camera when I;m captureing ? or perhaps any other time ? this camera has a lot of settings.
    Its funny that Windows Movie Maker works just fine. everything works in that program. I can put things on the hard drive; then pull them off and play them with no problems.

    I think I just found my problem; please correct me if I'm wrong.

    In Vagas when in the help

    What do you want to do with your movie/

    I click:
    save to hard drive

    Then you have to chose;

    Video for windows (*avi) this is what I chose
    Main Concept MPG-1 (*mpg)
    Main Concept MPG 2 (*mpg
    Quicktime7 (*mov)
    Real media 9 (*rm)
    Windows Media VideoV9 (*wmv)

    I;m not sure I picked the right one
    Is this where Im messed up?

    You need to transfer the digital files from the camera tape to your PC hard drive in the mpeg2 transport format (.m2t) before you can do anything at all. Once you have the .m2t's, review them with MPC or VLC, pull them into a Vegas project, etc. Then render the project into your chosen format (avi, wmv, mpg, etc.)

    Basic capture steps:

    Set camera to play mode
    Rewind tape to desired position
    Verify camera is set to output HDV on the firewire port (go into menus)
    Connect camera to pc by firewire
    In Vegas, go File>Capture
    Select HDV/SDI
    Specify filename, save folder, (other capture preferences available in top left corner)
    Click the red capture button in the Vegas capture window

    You now have the files you need to do editing in Vegas (or any other editor) or to just play/review with either the MPC/VLC players. Windows Media Player should also play these but it's kind of glitchy.
