Will do, and it promises to be a first of the subject matter! Sounds dodgy, but alas, it's not! Just need to buy a tripod now.

is this the iVIS? I was thinking about getting that one, but its NTSC.All in it cost me £434 from Japan
Yes it is. It's NTSC. This means you are going to have to deal with pull down just like 95% of the world. From what I read however, this is about to be made very simple by the upcoming Premiere CS3. Someone else will confirm I'm sure... I took into account residuals and still think this represents better value for those in the UK who are tight (or on a budget). Because of the high spec of this camcorder, resale prices will not tumble for a long time, so even if I sold this (in x amount of time) for a ridiculous £250 I would still have only lost £175. Think about what you would lose on a £700 purchase.
THe bottom line is that it's cheaper but has more hassle and some Japanese buttons, that take all of 30sec to figure out what they do.
Hey guys im new to this forum, its great from what ive seen so far, i have already learned allot about this great camcorder from everyone even though i have not actually seen or held the cam in person!!
I am away on holiday for a week but as soon as i get back i will be buying from BEST CAMERAS based in England, Liverpool. I am veering towards them instead of PIXMANIA or DABS mainly because they are situated closer and come with a true 2 year warranty aswell as a free table tripod although I am not too sure what the situation with other company warranty deals...
So it should be with me under 2 weeks for £689 incl insured delivery.
Cant wait!!![]()
It came to that price after a little negotiation.![]()
I'm thinking that I might get one of these even in NTSC form and then flog it on ebay if I find NTSC to be a PITA.
Do they avoid duty/VAT by declaring it to be a gift?
The strong pound/dollar coupled with a $50 discount for paying through Google Checkout (and the dire lowlight performance of my MX500B at my daughter's school show) has proven too much temptation for me to resist. I'm going for one of these boys.
My impression is that the OIS is not nearly as good as the Pana, so I'm going to try to make myself a monopod/shoulder mount gizmo to deal with it.
^Let us know how it turns out.
I strongly recommend against ordering from Pixmania. I ordered my HV20 from them when the price dropped to 676 UK pounds including delivery. They ship from France, which I wasn't aware of at the time of order.
I've since read a lot of complaints from people who say that you have to return the item to France if you need a warranty repair, and that Pixmania will often deny the warranty, and then hold you to ransom to get the item back! One report said that on a 200 pound camera Pixmania wanted 160 pounds for the repair, or 145 pounds for the quote for repair - and this supposedly during the warranty period.
Furthermore, although I have had none of the warranty problems, that may only be because I haven't got my camera either.
My item was 'damaged' in transit and some items went 'missing'. i.e. It got nicked before it got to my door. Pixmania won't refund me until DHL have completed a full investigation in a month's time. That sounds fairly reasonable until you think about it: what has it got to do with me whether or not DHL figure out what happened to it? Since they never got the the point of delivery, this is a matter between Pixmania and DHL, and I would like my money back please. But apparently not.
I'm extra annoyed because the camcorder was supposed to be for my wedding and honeymoon! Further, nobody at Pixmania has the ability to change anything, and there are no managers you can speak to. I explained the situation over the phone, and they told me to email. The reply to the email came back later than the guaranteed time it was supposed to be replied to and simply said 'Please try to be patient'.
In the end I set my credit card company on them, and I will make damn sure that as few people go to pixmania as possible from now on. Luckily my credit card company were able to guarantee me that I would get the money back, and were generally helpful, so I felt safe enough to go and order another - from a different supplier! If I had been unable to get this it would have genuinely cast a cloud -albeit a small one- over my whole wedding day.
I'm sure it's not the norm, and you'll probably be fine, but as you can see from above there are plenty of reasons to shop around.
As time goes by and my salary goes up I am more and more turning to places I can trust and paying the premium for that. After all, my time's worth money these days and I would rather spend an extra twenty quid on my HV20 and know that I'm less likely to spend a solid week worrying about things and trying to get them sorted out.
Don't Amazon have them at a reasonable price? I suspect stock may be an issue, though.
Actually stock was a real issue for me. Because I really needed to get this thing in a hurry for the wedding I had to take where I could get. Most places said 'expecting in 1-3 days.. or weeks (amazon!).
If I see any in stock at good prices anywhere I'll try and remember to post. Most of the places that have it at the moment, I don't have any experience with so I would hesitate to recommend them. I was never that impressed with Dabs, but I do know people who swear by them - so if it comes back in stock there that wouldn't be a bad place to buy at 699.
I got from a trade supplier through work, so I can't help you there. Their regular price is a lot higher. The place I got it from had 4 in stock, so I called them directly. By the time I got through they were down to two! It worked out at about 700, but it was well worth the 25 quid difference to get it whilst it was in stock (not to mention from somewhere I trust).
I'm sure you'll get one for a good price, so long as you're not in a hurry like me!
On the subject of warranties... well. I never pay for extended warranties because the value of techie stuff is always so much less after two, let alone three years. But in theory warranties cover you for failure due to the quality of the item, and home insurance (if you pay for it) covers you for accidental damage to the item. But the two don't really cross over. So if it breaks then it's either Canon's fault and they fix it, or it's your fault and you claim on your insurance (or take the hit).
Further to the Pixmania debacle - I followed up with them today and they want my bank details to refund me. Not a chance are they getting them. It's going through my credit card company from now on.
- Matt
www.dabs.com have the HV20 in stock now, at 699 pounds with TWO deals attached. 1) order it this weekend and get free delivery and 2) 2 for 1 tickets to Vue cinemas for a whole year. Now as I said, I wouldn't sing high praises of dabs, but a lot of my friends would and I would argue that they're not a BAD company. Anyway - I said I'd report when it came back in stock. Don't expect it to last!![]()
Cheers - it actually arrived ay work yesterday - from Pixmania.
I rang up and cancelled it with them as they had no stock. The next day I ordered it with Dabs (1-2 days). Purely by chance I checked my credit card balance with £700+ pending????? I had not had a confirmation of cancellation by pixmania so went on and order tracked only to find that it had been shipped! Went back to Dabs and cancelled it.
Hey ho, at least I have it now along with my Lacie Porsche hard drive...... all I need now is our baby!
In the mean time looks like the chores will have to wait this weekend, I've got sh1t to film!![]()
Just to let you know that I also bought from Cyber-Japan, but customs were more on the ball this time and I'm having to pay £51 on top of the £420ish. Still a good price. But I'm still fairly certain that I'm going to ebay it without opening as I think I really want a PAL model.
I took advantage of the www.equipmentexpress.co.uk june deal on the Hv20.
£699 inc VAT+DELIVERY. Free Tape (standart JVC mini dv), Case (Tamrac digital double decker 2), Spare battery (Hahnel HL-2L) and 2 year warranty.
best deal i could find at the time (25th June 07)
I like the idea of paying a little bit more for an extra year's warranty.
the Amazon UK price (sourced from Amazon) has been bouncing around and went up to around £770 and is now £691, although showing 1-3 week delivery, which with amazon often means 3 weeks then a week to deliver from my experience with them. I do like their returns policy though.
Podman, did Equipment Express say they had it in stock?
I could possibly pick it up from the Altrincham store, which would also make things easy for warranty returns.![]()
Jus thought i might say i think www.pricerunner.co.uk is by far the best price comparison site for electronics. It's got details, reviews of product and retailer. Brilliant
I ordered mine from equipment express too. I bought my HV10 from them too and they have been great.
Really annoyed that I bought my HV20 in April and thus missed out on the 2 for 1 cinema offer. Honeslty, canon shoulnt penalise people for buying early!!
