No doubt..... but then you more or less expect to see this sort of thing on a system as opened as android. It's the news agencies who made this remark about Apple:

A number of news sites have remarked that for all the scrutiny Apple places on apps listed in their store, a counterfeit copy of an existing app should not have made it through the process, and the days it had been since the developer had alerted Apple to the counterfeit software is disconcerting to developers.
The whole point of the app store (according to YOU people) is to fix it so it's NOT a jungle out there. It's working out quite well isn't it

And how many counterfeits are out there in the Android world? And where can a developer file a complaint?

Bob, you seem to like make mountains out of a mole hill. Apple pulled that app. What else were they supposed to do?

Bob if you're so concerned about CC fraud, why don't you use Apple Gift Cards? I can get them at my local 7-11, a five minute walk from here. I haven't seen Android Gift Cards in there.

You don't need one. I can download thousands of free apps from the Google Play store without ever giving Google any credit card information. Any time you give out your credit card online it runs the risk of being hacked.

You're missing the point (or trying to ignore it).

Skype is a 100%free app. Yet when I went to download it I was asked my preferred method of payment. One assumes of course this is for the file in case you make purchase somewhere down the road. But you see CB... stuff like credit card and identity theft are real. They exist and are most certainly NOT mole hills. And furthermore... try to imagine having your whole life turned upside down over a free app.

Given this.... why does apple choose to put its customers at risk so unnecessarily? Android does not talk about credit cards when I download free apps why is apple doing this?

They ask you for your CC # to get your Apple ID. That doesn't have anything to to do with the fact that an app is free or not. I bet you have also an Amazon or B&H account. They also should have your CC information.

Do I smell some paranoia here, or is it only your typical bias against Apple that you have to start nit picking?

    WRONG!

You don't need to register a credit card for an Apple ID. Here let me help you.

I guess it takes a deeper understanding of stupidity to move beyond fool proof to sanders proof.

You think credit card theft is "nit picking"? Why do you need a CC for an ID?? They don't charge you for an ID.

Look... I'll answer the question for you because I've asked it at least 4 times now.

It's the oldest and most used sales trick in the book. It's the EXACT same reason why Beth and others want donation buttons directly on the app. It's called IMPULSE BUYING. They want to set it up so that buying takes as little thought and time as possible.

Your app store is an Apple money grab.

Then you give them your credit card info. The point here is that you don't need to give any credit card information to get free apps from Google Play. You do need to from iTunes. Therefore, even getting free apps from iTunes exposes you to credit card fraud. How is this not clear to you?

edit: Just looking at Huey's link re: no credit card req'd. I don't recall being presented with this option when I created my itunes account. It looks to be dated to at least 2009 so I must have missed it.

Got it. I've edited my post to account for your information. As I noted in my edit, I do not recall being presented with the "no credit card required" option.

Yeah, they seemed to have changed that. I needed a card also when I registered my ID.

CC fraud? I don't know. I trust Apple as well as Amazon and B&H. Those are the only companies who have my info. I wouldn't give my card to my wife though....

You can get an Apple ID without a credit card and use Apple Gift Cards to purchase, how's that the same, unless there are Android gift cards?

Maybe it's just me, but I'm reluctant to submit my CC info unless it's absolutely necessary, so I make sure.

You would appear to be correct. As I said above, I wasn't aware that you could create an account without a credit card. This was not offered as an option when i created my iTunes account.

There is a fundamental difference between using a credit card to make a purchase on the web vs. having a company hold your cc information on file in an account. iTunes holds your info and it can be hacked like this.

I'm not buying anything that requires Itunes, so that's that for me.

Well, I'm using a debit card that only has the amount I want to spend on it. Most of the time it is empty, so the bank would block any money in any way.

Huey, from post #37 of your link ...
" Hate to say this, but my account was hacked twice since 2008. Once while I was living in England and once while I was living in the States. I use varying 12 digit alpha, numeric, upper and lower case, plus special keys. This was two seperate credit cards. I no longer give Apple any of my credit card info. Ever! "

Fair enough, but for one thing it's a personal testimony (an alien abduction fallacy), and, as pointed out, you don't have to register your credit card.
