Well, if manufacturers were to hold on to old standards, we'd have more ports than keyboard keys on our computers today...
Remember RS-232, Centronics, SCSI and whatnot... ?
My point was to introduce new protocols, new ports, but then make adaptors to enable the use of legacy hardware. What am to do with my boxful of ExpressCards and FW devices? I know, I'll keep an old computer around so I can access data.
You pretty much described USB. And with no new adapters necessary.
I'm dreaming of high-speed, compact wireless transfer system which can be used by everything... Mmmmm. Just imagine! I'm looking at my desk right now, and a good 20% of the surface is taken up by wires–more than my computer takes up. And it's a big desk.
One day, brothers and sisters, comrades, we will live in a world without wires.
World peace and wireless.
