That might be the problem. Would using these for intensive tasks shorten the hardware lifespan vs a water cooled desktop?

For obvious reasons a desktop will always be more powerful, and more economically feasible than a laptop. But Dell touts its superior cooling capability particularity in this most recent version. They claims its got huge (but quiet) fans:

The new workstations will feature quiet dual fans and cooling solutions for the CPU and graphics allowing long periods of high performance without overheating, according to Dell.

That said, the idea that you can do up to full 4k editing on a mobile workstation is a phenomenal achievement. Especially considering where mobile computing was just a few short years ago. This laptop can out perform all but the most fully equipped desktops around, and even then not by much. On the other hand, you pay through the nose for that type of mobile performance.

    What about the software?
The Korova milkbar sold milk-plus, milk plus vellocet or synthemesc or drencrom, which is what we were drinking. This would sharpen you up and make you ready for a bit of the old ultra-violence.

.... but depending on the motherboard, you could make a great Hackintosh out of it. Dumb thing is only that the latest MBP with similar specs is way cheaper....

And better looking. How come Dell products get such a working over with the ugly stick?

Actually, out of the box Mac can't come close to it. Besides, Mac doesn't really make computers (workstations) in this class. And no one that would buy a MBP would be remotely interested in this kind of laptop. Its only real competition is HP w8770. And to a much lesser extent, perhaps Lenovo.

I don't get why anyone thinks this is a good idea.

I wasn't trying to sell it just answering your question. I'm not partial to touch screen. I'm obsessive-compulsive about the fingerprints. And it is an accessory so you don't have to order it.

I am however partial to the LED-backbit IPS PremierColor screen w/100%+ Adobe RGB . That's one addition no one I know of wouldn't be happy about.

So a touchy pointy display is a requirement for win. 8? Since I posted that picture I reflected on all the dumb ideas that've made it off the drawing board and released into the market. I can't think of a single one that matches the stupidity of this thing, not even close. Anyone?

Your kidding right? Apple popularized touchy-feely with their iphone, and everybody else just followed suit after that.

Smartphones set the standard, and Apple lead in smartphones. Aren't you the tech industry buff around here? I'm sure I'm not telling you anything you don't already know. MS might be a bit late to the game, but that's what MS 8 will be all about.

As for me it's nothing more than a gimmick, and I certainly wouldn't order it especially if I had to pay extra for it.

I think Nintendo gets the credit for popularizing the touch screen:

"Touchscreens would not be popularly used for video games until the release of the Nintendo DS in 2004"

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Touch_screen#History

Sure it works on a mobile device, but on a PC? That's just asinine.

Yes, and they tested touch screens for iMacs and MacBooks with the conclusion it'd be an idiotic idea for a computer. It works with Wacom Cintiq monitors that lay more or the less flat on your desk. However, they are graphic tablets on steroids. If you use them as your only screen flat on the table, you'll get a stiff neck. If you tilt them up, you'll get stiff wrists.... choose your poison

Seriously. It's like something from The Onion! Any luck in thinking of something real that comes even close to this stupidity?

Kids with sticky fingers around the world. Retards who jam their long fingernails into your display to point something out. Those kinds of users - it's perfect for them.

If it something like that coffee table thingie they showed years ago, it might work. Was actually cool, but working with that a whole day? I don't know.

Oh for gods sake guys, pissing and moaning about touchscreen on a PC is bloody useless. Windows 8's Touchscreen and metro display etc etc is designed for tablet PC's and phones. Windows 8 probably won't be as popular, it doesn't seem to offer much in the way of innovation for the usual gamer/editor guys among us.
Putting it on a laptop might indeed be retarded, but who knows... maybe it will be useful for SOMEONE.

Don't turn this into another wine and song about Apple and Windows... it's getting real old real fast.

The average old fart who can't use a mouse? I'm serious, I know old people who can't use a PC simply because they don't understand how to use the mouse.

Anyway, regarding this laptop... out of my price range, and useless to me anyway. I don't travel (no need to "edit on the go"), and I already have a PC capable of editing at home.

That's why I got me an iPad

Those old farts will throw their touch screens away very fast, as it is not the best for their arthritis.
