Default Revenge fo the Great Camera shoot part 2

    http://www.zacuto.com/shootout-reven...otout-part-two

All the cameras are revealed and you can see which ones you like best.

I liked the Arria Alexa and Sony F65 best. Didn't care for the over saturated look of the Gh2, and the Red Epic looked ok, but not awesome like I expected it to.

    Iphone looked like crap.

7D, FS100 looked ok, but not as good as 60K plus cameras.

He he....Tell that to Francis Ford Copolla. It was his first choice and according to someone who actually attended the showing at LucasFilm he was talking about buying his wife one. FYI

I wouldn't say the IPhone footage is crap. I'd rather say it has its own, unique character

Watched the whole thing. So, why wasn't film included? Oh wait, it is and will always be the GREATEST. No need for any further discussion.

Well if Copolla likes shit on a stick that doesn't mean I will. It's very subjective and many people did like the over saturated look of the Gh2, but many people like myself found it very unappealing. Whether a famous director likes it or not doesn't change my opinion.

There was some clarification by Zacuto on this exchange in another forum. What he meant was please don't give Producers the idea they can save money and shoot a film with an Iphone. Yes you CAN do it, but you're going to have to jump through a bazillion hoops to make it look good, and by the time you finish you will probably spend more money in post than you saved by using a cheap camera.

it's kinda like "yea, don't bother to move that car. We can just take it out in post." Sure you CAN, but why would you? It would be much cheaper to take 5 minutes and move it out of the shot.

And this guy meant the same thing with the cameras, like yea, don't bother to rent an Alexa, we can just shoot with an Iphone, use a ton more lights, and fix it in post. Sure you CAN, but why would you if you have the budget for an Alexa?

2nd part definitely was better than the first part.

Nothing much new to learn though.

I'm watching this and I'm listening to people go "Oh, which one was the iPhone? I'd like to know which one." and I'm thinking - really? How can they not know? To me, the iPhone footage stick out like an apple in an orange bin.

    A. Sony F3: flat image, very boring.
    B. GH2: Not bad, just a little overboard on the saturation perhaps.
    C. RED Epic: nothing blew me away. Kind of felt flat as well, not as much as the F3 though. The color grader was not very good.
    D. iPhone 4S: It's video from a cell phone. Moving on. Seriously, anybody who couldn't pinpoint this one was seriously kidding themselves.
    E. C300: Same as the RED.
    F. ARRI Allexa: Decent, just the saturation I didn't like.
    G. 7D: Whoa... expected more from this one, folks. Probably one step above the iPhone, and that's 2 steps above the bottom. Why that chick picked the 7D... just, odd.
    H. Sony F65: I know I've been anal about the saturated colors, and this one has it too... but this one was the winner IMO.
    I. Sony FS100: 3rd from the bottom.

    My verdict:
    1. Sony F65
    2/3. GH2 / ARRI Alexa
    4. Sony F3
    5. RED
    6. C300
    7. Sony FS100
    8. 7D
    9. iPhone

Wow, now I know why I'm not big time lol, because these people would hate my guts. I look up at my reviews, and they're not very positive. But it was refreshing to keep hearing people say it's subjective... so that does help somewhat. I think they could have conducted a test where the lighting/background was a little less orchestrated. Have somebody in a phone booth at night, somebody standing in a busy street, have a kid run across a hilltop through tall grass, etc. I'd be way too opinionated about my distaste for the majority of the footage we see here, and I guess this is why we should remember that there are no winners or losers here (except the iPhone is obviously garbage, come on).

It's invariably warming to my heart to know that I've shot better footage in the natural outdoors with the HV40 and XH-A1 than these guys - who had 100% control over their environment INDOORS.

Loved this documentary. Downloaded, and will watch many times over.

I agree that some outdoor footage would have been nice to add to the test.

Line up all the cameras in a row outside in a big field, then have some people walk by them. You get the exact same lighting conditions for all cameras, same background etc.

I generally agree with you although I put the Gh2 close to the bottom because compared to the rest it looked so video like instead of like a movie.

F65 was my top pick, then Alexa. I was wondering what happened with the Epic footage because I've seen some really pretty Epic footage. 7d was disappointing compared to Alexa and F65 but not so much if you compare the price.

To be honest, i don't really get the point of making comparisons like this. They tell pretty much exactly *nothing* about the comparative abilities of the cameras involved (except maybe for showing some of the most obvious flaws of lowest end gear and that some of these flaws can be migitated by skilled lighting and color correction).

Other than that, the differences are more about the whims of the photographers than the gear: some just wanted to make pretty pictures, some instead wanted to show off the technical ability of their camera, others went to to flood the scene with fill light to approximate what the scene looked like through a higher end machine with appropriate dynamic range that can actually capture the whole original scene... fully irrational overall, no common goal, no common nominator.

Unless a test is performed in exactly the same circumstances, it won't tell the true difference between the cameras...

This comparison really got me determined to pull out as much as I can with my XH-A1. None of the cameras above looked like it for a movie... maybe for a Youtube Partner video, but definitely not Hollywood material. Did some shooting out in SF, and tried to give it as much "film" look material as I can. This is what I got.

(The customizable presets within the cam definitely helped out quote a bit. Turned up the Color Gain a little bit, upped the Green, and lowered the Red.)

I'm immensely bias, but I'd choose the XH-A1 over these cams any day. But... it is subjective, as these guys put it. I do believe that a test would have had better and more concise results if it was conducted outside like this.

PS... I gave a quick step by step process of what I did. No precise details, but ehh. Maybe I'll post them later.

Indeed. Film is the standard by which all others are judged. Why would royalty bother to attend a competition among mere plebeians? They simply bypassed the obvious.

Which only goes to prove there's no accounting for taste? You might also want to research the introduction of Technicolor. Two titles: "The Wizard of Oz" and "Gone with the Wind."

At last someone with something more than "I liked/didn't like it" However, sticking with the ordered alphabet would have been appreciated.

In that case you learned more than you give yourself credit for. I'm thinking that was kinda the point?

I'd come up with a completely different ranking:
    1.) GH2
    2.) 7D
    3.) iPhone
    5.) the rest.

Why should I drool over a camera that I can't afford in any way?

While it's fun to pixel peep and obsess over gear, that's why we're on this forum at all, the bottom line is the Iphone will work just fine if you can tell a compelling story and that's the real hard part.

If you can master the story telling on a Iphone, you can get a good DP and a good gaffer and a good camera. If you want to be a DP or a gaffer, then why are you trying to write and direct?
