Default Game #434 - The World, the Flesh and the Devil

    Game version 1
    One picture from one movie:

    Rule 1:
NO IMAGE HOSTING ON EXTERNAL SERVERS.
Images for the games need to be ATTACHED to the post, and thus uploaded to our server.

    Rule 2:
TWO GUESSES PER PERSON PER POSTED PICTURE!!! Those two guesses are not allowed to be in the same post, NOR in a consecutive post. I.e. you can post one guess, then have to wait for someone else to guess: your second guess is not allowed to be immediately following your first guess.

    Rule 3:
The WINNER of the game can start a new game IN A NEW THREAD.
NO ONE ELSE (unless yielded so by the winner).

    Rule 4:
Once there's a winner, PLEASE post the correct name into the thread (spelled correctly, and capitalized correctly, and not in italics or bold face.)

    Rule 5:
The correct title format is: "Game" / space / "#" / number.
    Example: " Game #12" (without the ")
(no space between the # sign and the number!)

    Rule 6:
The film selected should be one that has had an international, theatrical release.
I.e. a made-for-TV movie only shown in the USA would hardly be a fair entry, as
    we have international players also.

    Rule 7:
These complete rules (1 to 7) have to be copy & pasted into each new game's first post.

Okay, time for the next game, I guess. This film has a title that's been given to two films, two novels, a philosophical dissertation, and part of a religious text. And because I've given you such good clues already, I'm going to break my own rule and start with a difficult first frame...

Oh, and, here's a line of dialogue from the movie:

"Come out!! Why are you hiding from me? Come out!

The Innocents? (1961, with Deborah Kerr)

'The Innocents' does almost match all of the clues, but 'tain't it.

In a way, though, the characters in the film do kinda become the "innocents", by the end...

If you shut your eyes and only listened to the music score of this movie, you might think you were watching "Ben Hur".

If this frame reminds you of something, you'll know the genre of the film.

Matter of fact, there are a lot of scenes in this film that are suspiciously similar to scenes in several subsequent movies of the same genre.

    What is Krute's favourite movie?

This isn't it. But it's similar.

The movie makes a social comment which was considered bold for the time.

But not about America's reliance on cars...

A helpful quote, if you're familiar with Rod Serling.

"Time! As if there isn't enough time; there's more than enough time!"

While I was getting that quote ready, Janke wins again! Well done, Mister J!

Yes, it's "The World, The Flesh, and The Devil".

Another post-apocalypse favourite of mine. It has its flaws, but I'm sure it was an inspiration to DPs for many a scene in later PA movies; especially "The Omega Man." Released a matter of months after "On The Beach", probably to capitalise on the success of that marvelous film.

    Here's the money shot:

And that was done without the help of CGI, or even a matte painting, early in the morning in New York, before commuters arrived for work.

    Anything is possible.

Music was by Miklos Rosza, composer of the Ben Hur Score. If you've seen Ben Hur, you'll instantly recognise some of the musical motifs from that movie's score in this movie.

I was looking for 1950s and 60s films shot in Scope and b&w - there were many, but only two really seemed to fit the first image of the candle on the sewer pipe.

"The World, the Flesh and the Devil" was my second choice after "The Innocents" (which is psychological horror, thus a candle in a cellar fits like a glove... )

The subsequent images of a desolate city clinched it.

Now, for a new game - hmmm....
