    Default Best microphone

Ok sold my rode video mic, to tinny, picks up all sounds only good if near the subject can hear the motor sound slightly... Got zoom h1 and three voice recorders but there are times i just want the camcorders audio decently, is the rode video mic pro any better?

Sennheiser MK416, or Schoeps CMIT5U, Sanken CS-2, or Neumann has some decent ones also.

Except Mal's nice and oh-so-useful comments
Depending on how you want to get your audio?
Camera mounted: the most expensive mic won't change much imho.
Boomed: then it's a different story. Knowing the power of XLRs, get a beackteck or JuicedLink and use a shotgun microphone to get your audio (via a boom operator) and record it either with the H1, or directly in-camera.
Or if you're a "one-man-crew", then just use a Lav with your H1. Then you simply have to sync in post. Best possible sound on a budget without a crew.

With more details, we'd be able to help you adequately!

Longer cable if you don't use Lavs! And, I'd opt for a pair of Lavs + another H1 if needed. Clap and sync in post.

The Azden EX-503 (which takes power from the recorder) over the Audio-Technica ATR-3350 (which requires a battery to work). But that's me!
Daniel made a nice review of it recently:

As well as I did a quick test when I received it:

...compared to the ATR-3350, which sounds roomy and picks up more than what's needed:

The AT 3350 will also work without a battery if you cut the lead, remove the battery box, attach a new 3.5mm plug, and power it from a recorder such as the Zoom or Tascam.

Drapes, if you clip your lav to your belly button, it is no wonder you pick up too much.

Daniels review shows the best sound on the Azden however, in the 2 below Daniels, I think the room / location
and even where the mic happens to be located on the person,
are what are showing the larger differences, more than the differences in the mics themselves.

Of course it's hard to tell and the only way to know for sure would be for someone to use the same location
    and setup for both mics.

Even so, I'm very tempted to pick up the Azden based on Daniel's vid. even though I already have the AT 3350.

    Nice job Daniel!

Still, it won't sound as good as the EX-503. To me, the ATR-3350 doesn't sound good to my ears. So the Azden is the clear winner for me.

Without a doubt! But, as I said, it won't be as good in terms of audio clarity and overall quality compared to the Azden. You might prefer one over the other, but that's up to you to choose which one.

I know, it might not be 100% fair! But I don't have one, so I can't compare both in a video. That being said, even properly used, both lav sounds quite differently. Hence why I personally prefer the Azden.

That's what I like to think. Daniel's review is quite good and shows the potential of that microphone.

    liverpool :

I like my AT 3350 but Daniel did a great demo of the Azden which I just ordered.

If you can wait I'll A / B test them when it gets here and post the results.

My only complaint with the AT 3350 was that I couldn't get a decent level when plugged into
my mic pre amp which is an Echo Layla 3G.

Steve that would be great if ya could, i have three olympus me-15s but not the best... So going to get another zoom h1 rather than the rode vid mic. So need a couple of lav decent lapel mics...

    OK
I'll do an A / B test on both in the same setting when it arrives.

Wait for Steve's review. But personally, I'd recommend the EX-503 for two reason:
    1) Sounds better (crisper voice and better sound overall)
    2) Cheaper in price.

Well, Aaron Shirley already did a comparison between the EX-503, ATR-3350 & 88Pro Lav, a few months ago:

    More infos here.

And just to add, here's what Aaron wrote about the EX-503:

However, you have to careful with Azden in general. Their QA is a bit fluctuating. While I like that brand for the bang for the buck, it has happened that I had to return the one or the other item and only the second or even the third did actually work to my satisfaction.
Customer support is non existent with Azden, and if B&H wouldn't have taken the cases, I'd sit with defective-out-of-the-box products at home.

Thats a small shotgun, perfect in size for the HV and with about 70 bucks dirt cheap. I preferred it over the the Røde Videomic.

Oops, it's ECZ, not ECM (had Sony in the back of my head here apparently)
