Coming from a theatre and a little screen acting background, i often are tempted to see the production from the collaborative perspective- perhaps introduce fog here, etc.

So i just wanted to bounce of those in the music video field already how these issues often play out in reality and perhaps also what the books say.
when i do a video i ask what do you want. they tell me what they want and i film it. but some people don't have no ideas so i shot what i think will work.

yes thats the whole idea just depends if they got the money for it. with a $350-$500 video they only paying for a basic video. its up to them to bring everything they want in the video they just paying you to film and edit.

Hello has anybody done a music video of a whole album before or do the clients just make a music video of the track (or a couple of tracks) they really think is the best?

Music is sometimes described as a universal language. Indeed everyone makes music but can i do a music video of a language you hardly understand just based of the interpretation given? I guess that is possible although maybe best if the language used in the song is understood by the music video director.

Can anyone share experiences of doing music videos for a language they hardly understood and their suggestions?

Looking at http://www.hv20.com/showthread.php?4...-Rap-video-uhh is there another aspect of making music videos we are overlooking?

Should you just do your best however unattractive the song may be either because you are professional or want the money or should you stick with a 'quality' hit music video and refuse the gig?

You get paid for the gig, so you give your best. Your product will be a quality hit music video, even though the song might not be a hit. You owe that to your client.

The only reason why you would refuse to take that gig is because you don't know what to do with it. It touches your thoughts about language a bit. If someone translated the lyrics for me, I'd do a video sung in Kiswahili. However, I'd refuse to make a rap or hip hop video, as I don't have any connection to this genre (despite the fact that my kids torture me with that stuff on a daily base). Stuff like Daniel did with the nuthouse the other day, I'd most likely take on. That head banging stuff is closer to my heart.

A whole album as music video? The Who - Tommy or Quadrophenia - not really videos, but rather rock operas.

Now I don't get "Love, reign over me" out of my head...
"It is dark the other side. Very dark!" - "Oh, shut up and eat your toast!"

The music is one thing, the language (lyrics) are something altogether different. I can and have enjoyed music whose lyrics I do not understand. If there are no lyrics as in classical, jazz etc. then it is truly universal.

Well said Krane and nicely put.

Back to music videos, on reading what lasers can do to our well treasured equipment i guess it should be noted also that in making music videos, etc we should be careful when we willingly bring these lighting effects and enhancers. In this case we perhaps can not get a risk money except if it was expressly requested by the client.

Just curious by the way, what other professions do we have with forum members here? Any lawyers? Please give us some legal advice from time to time.

How about even starting a thread for legal issues only? I know the questions etc covers that but guess it takes a while to sift through all the information.

Perhaps we categorize the questions further into areas / more specific themes, etc. will also simplify and enhance research and re-reading, for many times same questions have been asked over and over again just because its difficult to read through all the loads which admittedly sometimes stray in all directions.
