That would be a mistake since the problem isn't in your software, rather, a hardware problem. You need to upgrade your editing system so it can keep up with what the software (which can out perform any system) can do.

Why not start with what you have in your machine now... and go from there?

Your CPU plays the video and the GPU handles the effects. If there are no effects and your video lags, stutter, or stalls then your CPU is inferior and needs to be replaced (it has to be very old).

As for the effects, all Adobe products after CS5 are 64 bit which means they can take advantage of unlimited RAM. Nevertheless, you need a video card that is optimized with this capability. The Nvidia CUDA are the approved cards, however any card with more than 896 GB of RAM can be used when properly set up.

Righteo, first thing is get yourself a new graphics card... go with something from Nvidia (GTX 550ti or up should suit your needs, if you game as well). Everything else should be right. Maybe get more HDD space (for personal files, backups and getting your footage off cards/tapes) and upgrade the ram to about 8gigs 1333mhz or higher.

That will boost your machine big time.

Make sure you are using a 7200 rpm drive, will boost performance from a 5500. I run an i7 Quad 2.0ghz laptop with ATI Graphics with 1GB dedicated VRAM, and then 8GB DDR 3.0 for general use, with a 72000 rpm 750gb drive. Premier Pro 5.5 runs like a dream for me. My specs aren't that superior to yours, save graphics - so just throw a new graphics chip in there like Dan suggested.

Well there is a problem here and the others have given you some suggestion. I would add to it but I won't spend your money without a budget.
