    Default After Effects Question

Is there a way to get the effects to render in the background while the program is minimized? It always stops rendering when I minimize it. I haven't been able to find an answer on google, and it's really annoying.

Hit the number 0 on the number pad, not spacebar.

Zero on the number pad works well enough. It renders a preview that plays at real speed. Now I just need to figure out why my dynamic link doesn't work anymore >.<

What do you mean by it doesn't work anymore? Its a part of the program. What is that you want to do that you can't do?

Minimizing it would have no effect on rendering. By definition background rendering means once engaged you can use your system as normal (provided you have sufficient resources, that is). Something else must be wrong.

Keeps giving me a timed out error.

When you hit play, it shows the effect on the video, but it needs to render the video the first time through. Problem is, when you minimize the program, the video stops playing and that stops the render.

Yeah. I'm certain that the spacebar playback won't render with it minimized... but pressing zero does a RAM preview which can render in the background. If you press 1 it will do a RAM preview + audio. Maybe the new versions (what the others are referring to) let you press spacebar and render with it minimized.

You have to be more specific than that. What is it you want to do; and how are you doing it?

If theres a way around this I don't know it. However, do you really need to minimize? You can go ahead and perform other tasks during the render (as long as you don't try to minimize of course) which is a background activity.

In Premiere, right click, hit replace with after effects composition, get ""timed out obtaining dynamiclink server connection" error.

It's not just minimizing. Clicking out of the box stops it as well. Anything that would stop the preview from playing stops the render. Which means I need to have after effects on top, and the video playing. A right pain in the ass when you're stabilizing a long video, especially if you're doing synthesize edges. Can take 5 minutes for a 1 minute clip.

Edit: Just checked the speed again. It is currently doing about 2 frames per second to render the effect.

Could be how you have the software configured? I don't know. Anyway, the procedure should be: File >Adobe dynamic link > and destination (After Effects etc).

Ah, now I understand. This is the way the software operate; its not a malfunction. You can only do the one operation at a time. When you referred to background, I assumed it was after the "send to render queue" function not the timeline rendering.

The "render the timeline" also operates only that one function, and you can't do anything else at the same time. That's how the software is designed.

But if you hit ZERO (0) on the number pad you can...

Just throwing it out there again.

The zero on the number pad will begin the render timeline. No other functions can be enabled at that time. Otherwise, the render will discontinue.

With longer renders, it's exactly what I was looking for. Start the render, go check my email, get some writing done on other things. After Effects even flashes when it's finished the render.

Obviously, but that is what he's looking for. I think you have to read through the thread. I don't know who's lost... you or I.

    Bert, did I miss something?

Nope, that's exactly what I was looking for actually.
