Default New at this! Cannot transfer video from HV20 to my Mac?

hello, I work on an Imac and I've recently purchased a used Hv20 on ebay, shot some video to play around with in after effects. It came with a firewire to USB cable, I hook it up to the computer but nothing happens? I opened, imove, iphoto, after effects, nothing seems to see that the camcorder is connectted? What am I doing wrong?

Any help would be much appreciated, thanks.

Just to clarify, I connected it with the USb cable that attached to the camcorder behind where the monitor pulls out

Are you sure the HV20 has a working FW port? It is not uncommon for that port to be "fried"...

    Edit: Strike the above:

To transfer video, you must use the Firewire port - not the USB!

"firewire to USB cable" - that's a hoax, won't work. You need a proper 4-pin to 6 or 9 pin Firewire cable - 6 or 9 depending on your Mac.

Is it really a firewire to usb cable? In that case, just get a simple firewire cable, either 4-pin (camera) to 4-pin (computer) or 4-pin (camera) to 9-pin (computer). In the following picture you can see a 4 pin to 9 pin firewire cable:

    Nope, that's a 4-to-6 pin cable...

C Ren, be sure to get the right cable! Check your computer socket, and look at this page:

Ah, nice catch Janke... (Another) Screw up by me. I can't change the first post to replace the picture, it should be:
At least the most recent iMac has a firewire 800 9pin port. But indeed C Ren, look at the back of your iMac which version you'll need. At least you'll need a 4-pin on one side to connect the camera.
