So it's late and I can't sleep once again. I'm cruising around B&H's site, checking things out I can't afford right now.
They have 2 3D 1080 cameras for around $230, by Aiptek and DXG. Can these things possibly be good at all?

In short: No!
They are something I'd give my ten year old boy to fool around with, but not more.
"It is dark the other side. Very dark!" - "Oh, shut up and eat your toast!"
The GoPro 3D setup is pretty great... you're stuck with the wide angle lenses and nothing is adjustable during shooting (toe, interaxial, focus, exposure, frame rate, etc.) but Cineform does let you shift convergence during a shot while in editing. Light weight and dead easy to use rig. Around $700 for two GoPro Hero 2s and the 3D rig.
Thanks bozo. Was looking more in the "cheap cheap" range just for S&G. But I got another toy I'm considering...a pico projector.

I don't know, they look cool to me!
Yes, cool video indeed! But the image was seldom over a foot or so wide - and in a very dark environment, to boot...
But did I say that I thought the video was cool... ?
That was one cool video!
(But yeah, the projector is pretty much useless....)
I recently bought the DXG-5F9VK HD 1080p 3D Camcorder
for an experiment.
It will also matter what kind of 3D TV you have, in order to showcase your 3D material.
I also went cheap on the 3D TV which was about $300 for a 32" one.
Once I go that cheap, I am always left to wonder:
Is it sufficiently good to sample the concept, or is it simply so bad, that I am put off the whole idea?
The 3D effect is neat, but I am left wondering if the shortcoming are TV or cam based.
Oh, and since we're talking 3D, we should probably specify: the DXG records side-by-side, and the TV is a passive polarizing glasses type.
Summary:
you can sample the 3D effect using the DXG (as long as you also have a 3D TV *), but it remains a gimmick.
IMHO even purchasing a much higher priced 3D camera will be a gimmick though, just with slightly better quality.
* The screen of the DXG does display 3D without glasses, but that's not really a delivery option.
