Default Audio related questions - using 3.5 and XLR

    Hey guys,

I have a little AZDEN mic which I have found quite servicable for on location audio, but it has a 3.5 jack rather than an XLR input. I also have a pair of lapel mics which both use XLR inputs - and I'm trying to find a way to hook all of this up to my HV40.

Now, the box I'm looking to use to alleviate this problem is a Juiced Link CX211:

But what I can't work out is this - does this little box also support a 3.5 jack input as well as the two XLR inputs? Or would I have to make an adapter for the AZDEN mic to make this a viable option - and more importantly, would that extra adapter then add extra noise to my setup?

I'm sorry, I'm not terribly up on sound devices.

    Cheers,
    Allan.

Simultaneously? The CX211 handles only 2 inputs, AFAIK.

Looks like it has no 3.5mm jack, but an adapter can be used, however, you then lose the input's balanced feature, meaning that a long cable is susceptible to hum and other interference in an electrically noisy environment (motors, fluorescent lights, cellphones etc.)...

Okay. That's what I was really trying to clarify - I know I'm only able to hook two out of the three audio devices I have up to the Juicedlink - but it's imperative that I have an input for a 3.5mm jack, so I might try and cobble up one of the Beachtek adapters instead.

    Cheers!

    1) You can't, as Janke explained below:
    2) Your best bet would be to DIY an XLR plug instead of that 3.5mm. You won't get better audio out of it, it won't be balanced but it will allow to hook up the JuicedLink.
    3) You can't hook up more than 2 mics on anything else than a field mixer, unless you'd "combine" audio channels together: 4 audio trackla> stereo. But there's no point doing such.

    1) It has only 2 inputs, indeed.
    2) That's the downside of it.

Put that mic to the side until its needed. All you get is two audio inputs and the XLR always take priority. Now if you were talking about a 5.1 set up and separate audio device? That's another story.

Sure, XLR is better, even for Lavs. As Krane said, put that 3.5mm mic on ice for now, better to get a decent XLR balanced mic instead.
And talking about 5.1 surround audio: it can't be achieved "LIVE" but rather by recording various sounds and then mixing them properly in post.
