Thread: UHF wireless solution for hv30

Default UHF wireless solution for hv30

    Hello
I am recording a stage show with hv30. I need to get good audio feed in hv30. There is a sound board which is in front of stage, but I am recording the show from the back of stage. The hall maybe approx 60ft long.

Leaving the option of wired input from xlr adapters in my hv30, what would be the best solution to get a wireless input in my hv30 from a sound board, without getting wired connections in my hv30.

    Lemme know

The cheap way would be a recorder like the Zoom H4.
A more expensive way would be a wireless lav system from Audio Technika, Sennheiser or Sony.
I have been using my Sony several times plugged into the board. You can change the transmitter's input between line and mic.

    Thanks cgbier
I do have a zoom but I don't want to do the post sync. Instead of a lav system can I use a wireless system with some transmitter which hooks up in the mixer and then have the wireless receiver plugged in to my hv30. Would that be possible since I want to get the sound from a mixer board. Thanks

Doesn't matter what you plug into the transmitter.

Yes. You could do wireless from board to wireless line in on cam. I don't see any issues with this, as long as the person in charge of the board has no problems with you doing this. Sometimes the person running the board can be a bit of a pain to deal with though. Being extra friendly to the person running the board can be very beneficial to you. Just make sure you set up ahead of time so you can test and make sure your levels are adjusted accordingly.

Yeah I do that when I have multi-microphone seminars.

zagnut is right, always be nice to the sound guy. You never know if you will need him somewhen.

Why don't you want to sync up the zoom audio in post?
That's got to be the cheapest and easiest option.
The Korova milkbar sold milk-plus, milk plus vellocet or synthemesc or drencrom, which is what we were drinking. This would sharpen you up and make you ready for a bit of the old ultra-violence.

    Any of these would do.

However, if you don't need/use this system on a regular base, it comes cheaper to buy the H4. It's the more versatile tool to boot. For the price difference you can add a Pluraleyes license. With FCP X (in case you have a Mac) you don't even need Pluraleyes.
OTOH, synching audio by eyeballing is very easy, just takes a bit of practice.

And it gets very expensive if you want dual channel (for stereo).

Oh and the HV audio is compressed, but you'll get full PCM off the zoom. Not a big deal on its own, but another reason to not go back to camera, FWIW.

Use the Zoom and keep it and the camera(s) running uninterrupted and you only need to sync once. No problem.

You might get hum/buzz off the board using that method with a quarter inch. Hot signal too. Be careful.

    I'd go with the Zoo.

Almo, most transmitters can be switched between mic and line, so the signal shouldn't be an issue, and if I ever get hum from the deck, I'll strangle the technician for stupidity.

I know that many of you prefer zoom for practical reasons, but just say for some reason if we keep zoom out of the picture, what is the best option for wireless system setup with output from mixer and wireless input in my hv30. How do I set it up ( I mean where to connect the transmitter in the mixer), and then how to adjust the frequency in the transmitter and receiver and how to setup receiver with my hv30. Another question is which wireless system should I buy, I do not want any mic option just the transmitter and receiver. Would this work?

That's too many variables. What does the desk output? Which wireless gear are you intending to buy? And and and, why the hell don't you just sync the Zoom audio in post? Come on man, you keep dodging that question. Just curious.

That's the question I asked the forum as to what wireless system should I buy and how do I connect to mixer, what output is required from mixer to the wireless transmitter.

I dont have any issues with zoom. I can o that as well. But I definitely want to look into a wireless audio option

Look, lining up audio from the zoom only adds about 10-15 minutes to your total editing time if you're syncing maybe three or four video tracks. If you start and stop your camera a lot, then you're going to run into issues with Zoom-Syncing (it will work, but it'll be more of a pain in the arse to fix).

I use the Zoom on a sound board a LOT when I film live performances, 9 times out of 10 I can get a clean signal from that method and use the on camera audio from the HV30's for ambience. It's really not that hard, and it's by far the cheapest possible solution. Go one step further, run your feed through a juicedlink or beachtek adapter and you may even get cleaner audio. I'm going to test this on my next live performance shoot (my Beachtek has AUX in... presumably for using those Sennheiser and Sony Wireless units).

I was asked to do a job where this guy wanted to shoot talents on a green screen and chroma key it to white in post. I asked why don't you just shoot it in white? Isn't your method a bit like buying a green car and painting it white when you could've bought a white car in the first place?

He couldn't answer my question either so I dumped him. I'm too old for such nonsense.

    That's funny!
I would've thought it was because he said you couldn't use a Mac for editing.
