Default Songs of the Voiceless Canary (27m doc)

I would like to share a 27 minute documentary about homelessness, drug abuse, and the problems people face on the streets of my hometown Thunder Bay

    Thanks for taking a look

I am happy that someone makes time to give the homeles etc and the 'screenless' some exposure even during these hard times. Hopefully their stories would be heard by many and some things and systems put in place to offer more effective assistance.

Wow! Awesome load of work you've put in that. There were nice interviews in that. I've been particularly touched by Lori's part.
Despite some technical issues (audio at some points) and maybe a little long establishing shots without dialog, I must admit that it really worth the half hour watch!
    Great work Brendan!

yeah some of the establishing shots are long, too long maybe. the idea while editing was to show the perpetual mood of it all, the trains keep grinding, the boats keep sailing, people become homeless and live on the streets, it's a never ending cycle. I tried my best to clean up the audio, I was mostly concerned about hearing what people are saying. there are also a couple times where I purposely glitch the audio and visuals for a short moment to create a jarring effect

thanks for watching guys, I really appreciate it

I thought so. Only thing I would have done would have been to add some voice while these shots.

Yes, I think you are right . I am going to college for film production next fall so I will keep this in mind when it comes time to make another documentary

Great film. I thought I'd watch a bit of it in the half time (soccer on TV). But it's impossible to leave it once you start looking.

Thanks for creating this documentary - I watched it from start to end sticked to the screen.

How long did it take to prepare this? Did you spent some time with picked persons in advance and started shooting later?

    Good job!,

Almost all of the footage I shot last summer and was unedited for about 6 months while I was working on other projects. Some of the footage like that of Chad & Grant I shot on the very first day I decided to work on this, it was by random chance that I stumbled upon them. I met Tom also by chance while asking people walking by if they had seen any homeless people around and him telling me his story. Turns out he has been in other documentaries before. The interviews with Tom where the only ones done as a follow up, the interviews with Larry from the Dew Drop Inn and John the outreach worker where the only ones really planned out ahead of time. What I learned is the best way to find subjects for this kind of thing is to just get out there every day and look, the homeless are never far when you are looking

I still keep in touch with Chad & Grant through facebook, they are still hoping trains and writing blues songs. Tom also keeps in touch with me through text message

The only expenses of this really was paying people for their interviews (which was also a way of getting them to trust me) which came to probably around $250 altogether

    Thanks for watching

I love your work here, bud. I'm actually doing something similar, interviewing homeless people and asking people about the situation in SF. And I can tell you that you did a pretty good job with the audio. I've sort of fotgotten the importance of not neglecting audio, so that's always a plus. I've had a dry spell in terms of video projects, but this movie of yours has really got me to light a fire under my own ass. I need to buck up and get back into the game. Good work, B.
