    No bikini chick today?

I think you should get a bit closer and fill more of the screen.

This was strictly a test for sound (syncing with the H4n and sound quality) and lighting plus deciding whether to go with 30p or 24p.

    1) Sync: hard to tell with Youtube playback but it seems to be quite good.
    2) H4n sounds great. Did you used it as a mic? If not, what mic have you used? (sounded echoish)
    3) Lighting is good. Maybe a backlight would help even more to make it look more "polished".
    4) As for 30p or 24p, it's personal. Both are quite similar though. I would personally opt for 24p as you can do it and I personally like it more over 30p. But as I said, it comes down to personal preferences there.

I can see the difference in the 30p and 24p. I think we're going with the 24p. It's adds a bit of motion blur which, IMO, makes it just a bit more dramatic and this will be a horror film. Not related to the chainsaw, that' just happened to be handy when we were doing the test.

thanks for listening. I have a horrible sound system so I couldn't tell if the sound was good. It sounds like a bit of an echo because there was actually a bit of an echo where we were shooting. I think it was from the concrete floors.

This was straight H4N on a light stand, no mic. Hit record, slap hands for the sync mark, sync in post like using a slate, that's it.

I would advertise you to get at least a mic to boom close to your talents to avoid such problems in post.
Using the recorder as the mic isn't the best solution neither, certainly not indoor.

Sounds pretty good, for the H4n mic though. I like the lighting too!

Agreed, the H4's mics are just wrong for this, that's why it's roomy. Also, the first take is blown out. You need to learn how to set your gain correctly.
The Korova milkbar sold milk-plus, milk plus vellocet or synthemesc or drencrom, which is what we were drinking. This would sharpen you up and make you ready for a bit of the old ultra-violence.

Thanks for pointing that out. We are working on setting the gain properly.

As Huey said, set the max peak at first: clap your hands and set the levels so it doesn't reach over -12dB (-6dB if really needed). Then, you're sure your sound won't clip and all you'll have to do will be to normalize in post. With Audacity, you can select a specific part of the audio track to normalize "more" that part if it's a bit too quiet.

It's quite impressive all the functions that are included for free, compared to Sony Sound Forge.

I always liked Audacity. Especially it's Noise Filter shines. If it had STP Surgical Noise Removal tool (filtering out frequencies), I'd use it over STP.

To answer you, using your own words "ignorant loser", what about that, in Three Kings, using Reverse Key Lighting:

Seriously? You don't have to light everything like it's a wedding video.

    stranger22.jpg

The Stranger (1946) Orson Welles stars in this tense thriller as a small-town professor who will stop at nothing to conceal his Nazi past, with Edward G. Robinson as the Nazi hunter out to expose him.

I'm not trying to take credit for it or anything. Those kinds of shots have been around a lot longer than me.

It's not like there have been no movies in the modern era to use film noir as inspiration, like Sin City or The Spirit.

Maybe you just watch comedies or documentaries.

You know how it is. Someone mentions something, and before you never thought about it, but now that you're thinking about it, it's everywhere. Now I"m constantly seeing movies with lighting shots like this.
