Looks like the days of Perian are over soon, so if you don't have downloaded it yet, do it now!

Perian is an Oepen Source plugin that adds a good load of codec libraries to Quicktime. MPEG Streamclip relies on it too for transcoding avi or mkv.

Hopefully someone is picking it up.
