Default How to rewind the HV20?

I have an HV20 and I can't seem to find anything in the manual that tells how to rewind the tape. I want to rewind it before it gets to the end and rewrite over it. I have a tape in it that is filled up and every time I record and input it to the computer all I can input is the old stuff that is on it and not the new stuff that was just recorded.

Put it in VCR mode and hit the rewind button below the LCD screen.

Not the best idea if you're shooting anything important; the more often you re-use a tape, the more likely it is to develop drop-outs (in HDV, they look like brief "freeze frames," half-second glitches of 'missing' footage). Tape is cheap, just buy some new ones.

Tapes are cheap, memories are irreplaceable...

That I don't understand - unless you have recorded in different formats (HD vs SD, or different frame rate), then your PC can't capture the other format(s)...

Are you sure you didn't accidently record over some stuff or NOT record when you thought you were recording and that's why your computer can't find it on the tape to import it?

I would go to http://www.lacolorshop.com and order tapes from Taky (he's very active on this forum) as his tapes are good and he delivers them cheaply and quickly. Rewind your tapes by pressing the rewind button on the LCD flipout screen while you're in Play (or A.K.A VCR) mode.

    Good luck!

Thanks for all the quick answers and the welcome. I have NO IDEA how to use the camera. I looked but can't find any VCR mode . I think I did manage to rewind it using the controller. I intentionally want to overwrite what is on the tape now. I also just want to shoot short videos (say 5 minutes) so I can down load only a little and try to edit it. What I don't want to do is download the old stuff on the tape. So basically shoot , rewind, input it to the computer and edit it, Then do it again and again until I learn what the heck I'm doing!

Ah I just read the last line from Deb6 play= VCR mode !

The VCR mode is easy to find: Take your camera in your hand, then turn the on-switch not to the left, but the right. Then flip out the LCD. At the bottom of the LCD are a bunch of buttons. Press the << one, and your tape will be rewound magically.

The 'VCR' mode might labelled 'Play' on your on switch, perhaps depending on which region of the world it was built for.

While the asie about tapes being cheap is true, if anyone did want to do a clean 'erase' of their tape (without a degausser) would it be 'sensible' to:

    1. Attach a mic to the audio input, but not turn the mic on, hence isolating any audio input to nil.
    2. Put a lens cap on.
    3. Rewind rhe tape.
    4. Press 'Record'
    5. Wait 60 minutes for a 'blank' tape that has recorded pure plack and no sound?

You want to flash the tape? Yes, that would be the way to go. Just wondering why.

VCR or VTR are the fancy terms for "play".

In terms of flashing a tape, I guess if anybody needed to do it, a 'clean'; tape would perhaps have less chance of artifacts than a tape where you just record over what was there. I seem to recall the equivalent being used on audio cassettes, back in the day.

In terms of 'VCR', I know the way the term was being used, but I noticed that mgmine couldn't find 'VCR mode', so I figured I might use the language printed on the dials to help out.

It is more about about a consistent, aka unbroken, timecode than artifacts. I'd suggest to not do it though (even though it is doable). New tapes are around two fifty a piece, and are much less risky than flashed tapes.

..oh, sorry, just figured out you are from Oz. Then it is two fifty plus import duty plus VAT plus breathing tax

:-) ... Hmm, we call our VAT by the name of GST like the Canadians. It usually does not apply on goods imported under about AUD $1000 or so, as its uneconomic to collect below that amount. Import duty is also probably uneconomic to apply at that level.

Breathing Tax? ... Nah, our pristine air and abundant natural beauty is pretty much free.

The only problem with DV tapes sourced from the US is that they will only record at 29.97 FPS ... and all the dialogue has this really weird accent.

    LOL!

Germany had a tax on lightbulbs in imported cars decades ago (to protect Osram). Their revenue was about 70k dollar a year - cost to collect these taxes was about 2 million, and Osram had an eternal tax holiday....

You must either be joking, or totally clueless...

Tape is tape, it's the camera that determines the recording framerate.

Of course, with all the blood rushing to their head, walking upside-down like that...

I'll try to add "joking" tags in the future.

    As for upside-down consider this:

    1. The north end of a magnet repels the north end of another magnet.
    2. A compass is basically a magnet balanced on a pin.
    3. The "north" end of a magnet would be repelled by the North Pole of the earth

Therefore "North" on a magnet is actually pointing at the South Pole.

I'll let you ponder this as the blood rushes to the heads of the Europeans and North Americans.

No, it's the pole of the magnet that's gone south...

Hey sorry for the confusion about VCR Mode / Play. I did not have the camera handy so tried to remember offhand. Hope you got it to work!

Correct, in that its the south pole of the compass needle that is pointing north. I think I have led this thread far enough off topic.

    What we learned:

    - I think we answered the question about how to rewind tapes.

    - We all agree that tapes are cheap, so don't reuse them, just buy a fresh one.

    - You can use US tapes in PAL country HV xx's and get PAL framerates :-)

    - People on this forum, like Janke and cgbier, are nice people who will have a joke with you, but who also have lots of knowledge to share.

Nah, you can keep me out of that. I'm German, so I'm blockheaded and rude without any sense of humor at all. The knowledge part? Well, I just had remembered to have had read this section in the manual....

And I'm a dour, sour Finn, not supposed to contain even an ounce of humor.

(A lot of E-number additives, though... or were they € additives, I never remember...)
