Default Harddrive Schematics: Your Capture, Editing and Rendering Harddrive Set-up.

I am interested in how people are setting up their harddrives for maximum efficiency in capture, editing and render/export.

From your internal/'C' drive to your externals - USB, FW, eSata, etc. And, how they linked, or their hierarchy; how do you stream/move your data around to achieve efficiency?

Please note which NLE are you using and any relevant settings or preferences.

    What's your method?

    Cheers.

F Drive: 2TB SATA Render drive
G Drive 2TB SATA Movie Storage
H Drive 2TB SATA Movie Storage

C drive/Q drive: Sata 1TB with two partitions, one 472gig and the other ~450gigs. The Q drive is there for software installs mostly.
D drive: Sata 2TB for footage, photos etc
J Drive: USB3 2TB for backups of downloads, software and films. Some photos as well.

As of the moment, no backups... which is stupid, I know.

Well because we're such good friends I feel compelled to rub this in. You should know better.

Partitioned C drive for all programs. Tutorial/movie/documents on the H half

I capture to an external drive only when I feel the need for portability or during backup. Otherwise, its all internal.

    1) 500gb external backup. 2) 320GB external 3) 64GB flash. I would like a 2TB RAID next but thats still out of my budget at the moment.

Okay, thanks guys. Which drive(s) do you capture to, store project settings on, and export/render out to? That, and what type of connections (USB, FW, eSata, Thunderbolt) would be interesting to know. Flow of data stuff. Thanks.

Well, as stated, all my drives are internal SATA so I do no capturing/rendering to externals at all. I used to once upon a time (both usb and FW) but I found flow rates just too low for any serious purposes. For that reason, when it was time to upgrade (this was a few years back) I went with a mobo which had 8 on-board SATA heads so I was never reduced to capturing/rendering via external again

Personally speaking, the only good I see in externals now is for back up and portability, but actually working on externals is just too dammed slow.

Time to upgrade: A USB 3.0 port and compatible device should take care of all that; eSATA port otherwise.

My D drive is the drive I capture to, thats a SATA drive. I also render to the same drive. All video work is done only on that drive. When the time comes, that'll be easier to back up.

This brigs an interesting question.... what about macs? This is not a mac forum but I would be quite interested in knowing how a mac user copes with 8 or 10+ internal sata II drives on a machine. I know with windows based machines it's pretty easy but is a mac user forced to go up in price with mac pro? With my XBX mobo I get 8 SATA heads on board and then with one expansion card I get another 4 for a total of 12 heads (I've got 3 open ones left for more expansion)... but how does a mac user expand and how many heads does a mac have to start with?

We got Thunderbolt and some nice RAID cabinets going with it.

    You mean something like this?

    http://store.apple.com/us/product/H5184VC/A/Thunderbolt

That's pretty expensive, and speed is still not on par with normal sata heads. Can you not simply add sata expansion cards to a mac? How many heads does the average mac come with?

I wouldn't think that it is expensive. A good RAID card costs around 500 bucks, 400 bucks for the drives, another 100 for the Thunderbolt controller, some mark up and you are quick to reach the Pegasus' price. Please be aware that we are talking NFL here, not high school varsity

What is your average Mac? Mini? iMac? Pro?

    HUH?
For $600 you can get a multi lane card with the ability for EIGHT drives, but you don't need to go that expensive.

How many sata connection does a mac come with? At least the standard 4 I would hope?

Which one? There are several models. How many cylinders has a car?

Bob, you are aware that you linked to the smallest Pegasus cabinet. The bigger ones with more drives have the same controller built in. The Pegasus aren't that expensive compared to their competitors.

Nope. Looking into getting that, too. Price don't scare me none...

I don't have any projects going at the moment, but am looking for financing for a 30-minute doc about the Finnish champion in Hot Air Ballooning... would be nice to get up!

Indeed it brigs another interesting question; have you got any interesting projects in the pipe, Bob?

OK, lets have a look. I'd love to see what your superior setup can do.
