Default Newbe needs help on saving HV30 tapes to computer.

Hi guys, I need your help! I have NO knowledge of editing software and am trying to find a way to copy my HV30 tapes to my computer to save . How can I do this and can the files be played back from my computer on my HDTV? I went to Best Buy and they recommended a Sony DVDIRECT to make DVD's. They told me it would copy at high definition. When I got it home and openned it up, I found out that is not the case. I would imagine this has been hashed out a million times. I really appreciate all of your help, I do not want to loose the tapes of vacations of my family and my new grandchildren.

Firewire port and firewire cable are the basic things you need. Connect you camera the computer, set it to play and start up you movie maker or iMovie. Then simply import (capture) your tape. Once this is done, you can start editing.

Shock! Horror! Surely not! I bet that salesman immediately went out back to his manager to claim the $10 bonus for having shifted the last shitty unit.
