Tamron 17-50mm 2.8 vc, for 17-55 2.8 canon

Hey guys now im using my 60ds more and more and have decided for the ceremony to use the hv40s and the rest of the day the 60ds, i just want to tie down my lens... I have the canon 100mm f2 ( brilliant although i think to much bokeh but will try to stop down to say f4 to not have as much blur depending on the lights... The 50mm 1.8 (ace), the sigma 1.4 low light essential, and the tamron 17-50 vc 2.8 which i have been told may be a little soft, although sometimes with the dslr it is not bad being a little soft, rather than pin sharp... ( looks)
Would i be better of selling the tamron for the canon 17-55 2.8 but i have heard its a pain focusing as it has a small focus pull and the tamron is fine? or should i get better glass say in the lens 24-70 l series, if the latter how would that effect the crop sensor at say the 24 end.... or overall am i covered with the lens i have.... steve

Try renting the Canon, try it out for a bit and compare the images. Everyones shooting conditions are different. You need to find out what works for you.

Yes, it is slightly softer than the non-vc version of thew same lens.

But: if you shoot video, you will probably not notice any softness (that will be visible in 18 Mpix stills...)

If you're happy with the lens, keep it!

Mmm thanks Janke, not much wrong with it, but all reports say the canon better but harder to use manual focus with the ring which is similar to the 50 1.8

I have no idea how the Tamron 17-50 is, but my experience with another Tamron (the 24-70 2.8) was that focusing manually was impossible due to the tiny focus pull range. I ended up getting the Sigma 24-70 2.8 (which is a little less sharp for stills) and it turned out to be a great lens for shooting video manually.
The only way to find out is to go to a decent shop where you can try both lenses.

I am a happy owner of Tamron 17-50mm 2.8 non-vc version.

On to more important issues ... The Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 XR Di II Lens' AF is rather fast, but the high pitch buzz made by the focus motor is deceptive - making the lens sound slower. I found AF accuracy to be quite good with relatively few missed shots (that were not my fault at least). This is an internal-focusing lens - It does not change length during focusing and the front element does not rotate. FTM (Full Time Manual) focusing is not supported. Since the manual focus ring is rather small and in front of the larger focus ring, I did not find the focus ring turning during autofocusing to be much of a problem. It does turn though. The Tamron 17-50's minimum focus distance is 10.6" (0.27m) and provides a respectable .22x magnification factor. Both the zoom and focus rings rotate the opposite direction of Canon's lens rings. A zoom lock switch is provided.
