Everytime I add a clip on the timeline it will either have a red or yellow bar above and I have to render entire/effects in work area. Its so time consuming, is this really necessary?

with sony vegas u dont need to render entire works all the time...but with adobe cs5.5 everytime i do something with this clip or sequence i always have to render works or entire works...
What GPU?
Are your Sequence and Project settings the same?
"It is dark the other side. Very dark!" - "Oh, shut up and eat your toast!"
yeah it should be the same...isnt it that rendering entire works ( red or yellow bars above the clips ) cos the clip is high resolution or too big file to preview, hence this rendering works needs to be applied? it just sucks that i always have to do it on every clip that i put in the timeline or whenever i have to add effects or anything as the green bar goes back to red/yellow.
is there anything that can b done so it will automatically have the green bar instead?
Well not if it has a yellow line. And even the red line (indicating rendering needed) will still play normally in some instances.
In any event, it just means your system is wanting. You either need to upgrade to a more powerful editor, or be content with rendering as you go along.
Incidentally, you might want to post your systems specifications? This will allow the determine for sure whether you need to upgrade or not.
im using a pc windows 7 intel core i5 500gb hard drive 3gb ddr3 multi in one media card reader.
also another question, when im playing my sequence, it always stops when i click anything on my other monitor ex: internet etc etc...that doesnt happen with sony vegas 10. Is there any setting that will overide this? i went all through the setting n i cant find anything. so basically, when im playing something on cs5.5 i cant click on anything else otherwise it will stop
and what GPU is built in?
3GB is on the very low end for video editing. CS5.5 is 64bit. The minimum RAM should be 8GB or more. Especially when you run other programs in the background.
...and editing from the system drive is a big no no. With your 3GB RAM it is even worse. You have a lot read/write cycles going on slowing you down.
Beef up your RAM, get a second 7200RPM drive, and check out the NVidia GPUs Adobe recommends. You'll end up with an editing power house... well close.
Vegas is, by far, not as resource hungry as Premiere.

Yes! I do agree with Cgbier! I think powering through editing is based on the processor speed and no. of cores, the size of the RAM, and then also the the graphics card as in the cuda mercury for adobe cs5.
My biz is growing very fast so am looking at getting top notch power and speed. I am getting a 4 ghz quad core with ssd as C drive, and 32 gb of RAM and nvidia cuda card with at least 2gb. Hurts my wallet though in the short run!
The GPU gets more and more important for video editing. With Mercury Engine and Open CL software can take more advantages of the GPU which sits mostly idle during editing. Therefore, get the biggest and baddest video card you can afford (but make sure it's compatible).

To get a better understanding, you might want to watch this presentation from Evan Schechtman on video ecosystem now and in the future:
It is a bit Apple centric, but the technical background is platform independent.

That depends on the specifications of your system, i.e. GPU. You didn't post your card model; but if its one that is supported by Adobe, you can go to preferences and switch the setting to utilize the card instead of software rendering. That will significantly increase the performance of your system.
