Default "Within The Institute" - A music video shoot (BTS)

Hey guys, figured I'd share some of my stuff from the last two days. I shot a music video yesterday for a band in my area, a metal band... in an old gaol in my town. It took about 7 hours shooting time all up.

The BTS video is very rough, the person who shot it for me was 11 years old and didn't really know how to use the camera. It should, however, give you a good idea of the shoot.

    Some BTS photos:

First shot is of our cast and crew.

Video will be released when I finish it, and I intend to spend a bit of time on this one rather than speed through post and release a potentially half finished product. As time goes on I will release screen grabs, but for those you will need to like my page on Facebook.

Feel free to ask me any questions, of course

Daniel, you're like my favorite guy on this board now. I really dig your style in general, dude (The hat is synonymous lol.)

And I liked that you showed something that people don't normally see: the interaction from the director to the actors. It's always awesome to hear what other directors say to their subjects just to prepare them for what shots you're going to do, what questions the subjects have, etc. I love BTS stuff.

First of all, that's cute, and secondly, she did a better job than most of what's on reality TV these days!

Thanks guys, appreciate you checking it out!

Mark, that fedora was a gift from an old friend and it has pretty much grown attached permenantly to my noggin since I got it (over two years ago). In fact, I wear it so much that it's no longer a black hat... it's more of a dark green (it's faded). Still, it's what makes me recognisable in many ways... so it's not going anywhere!

    Cheers Mal, appreciate that

    Very cool!

You'll get nice natural performance takes with the band hammering away like that, but how on earth could they hear the reference track over those drums?
The Korova milkbar sold milk-plus, milk plus vellocet or synthemesc or drencrom, which is what we were drinking. This would sharpen you up and make you ready for a bit of the old ultra-violence.

Actually, funny you should say that. They did have a bit of trouble. In fact, the drummer went out of time a little bit on some parts... but that was my fault (not a very loud stereo).

Indeed it's a dilemma, especially for this kind of music. If the drummer isn't hammering that kit, it will look fake. So I guess you need a heavy-duty fold back, so the drummer looks right and everyone can hear the reference over the noise.

looks like it will turn out to be a pretty cool clip bro!!!

re: the reference track, was going to ask the same thing Huey did. I will hopefully have a few film clips to work on in the near future, and this is a problem I have been stressing about (especially as I dont have a "stereo" anymore- I have a computer with monitor speakers to do that for me these days lol). One thing I did come up with was trying to mute the drums- practice pads over the snare & toms if possible etc, as well as stuffing the kit (blankets, pillows etc) as often happens with the kick drum during rehearsals anyway.

cant wait to see the finished clip dude!

I figured some of you would like to see a teaser?

I'll create a completely new thread for the final video though, but you guys may be interested in seeing this!

    Wow!
A teaser for a music vid! That's a first, for me at least.

But after the BTS and now this, I'm looking forward to seeing the finished job, so I'm teased.

How did you go with syncing up the reference?

I did it because I'm really keen to get this music video out into the world. The only reason it hasn't been released yet is because we're waiting for the track to be remastered. I've been cutting to an mp3 of the rough draft/EP version of the song. It won't cause any issues, its the same song... it'll just sound sweeter. I also did a teaser just to get the bands fans interested a bit more... trying to get more of them to like my facebook page and such.

Well, thats the intention! Good to hear Huey, I enjoy your views!

I had no real issues at all. I didn't have any sync markers, only because I was lazy and didn't bother giving any sync markers with the audio (something I really should have thought about). But, it's synced well... surprisingly easy
