    What is the most reliable way to capture HD Video from my HV20?

    The only way is to use FireWire, and capture in editing software.

    ... so what? I was deliberating for 4 years if I should snatch that D40 from a colleague, until I got it today....

    Your question is incomplete: reliable in what way? Capture card? Operating Program? Software? Editing system?
