    Default photos from dv tape

    Hi,
I have the canon hv20 and i have taken photos off the tape using the cameras photo button and i must say they look great and look good enough to print but is there any way of capturing them so i can check them frame by frame and avoid potential tape damage trying to find the exact shot i need i have tried using the snapshot on sony vegas but i end up with very poor quality still photos, help appreciated thanks

Uhm, your photos are on the SD card, not the tape.

No, he grabs the photos from tape to card, but is afraid of damaging the tape while searching for the "right frame". (I personally wouldn't be too scared of that...)

The only way to get good quality without searching the tape directly is to import the entire video to a HD video editor, and export the correct still frame from there.

I haven't worked with Vegas for quite a while, but you'd get a better quality out of your snapshot if you transcoded your footage to an inter-frame codec first, and/or exported a de-interlaced frame.

The HVxx does offer that capability but I'd avoid it unless absolutely necessary. First if you want/need a photo use a photo camera. Its a much easier way to get a still and the quality is way better.

Second, your HVxx does not need the added wear and tear on its meager components. When it wears out, it's gone. Its just too much trouble, especially with those needs better relegated to lesser devices.
