Anyone purchased lately, or have any comments before I buy?
I will use my old PC to dump footage to external HD, then edit with laptop while out of the house. Will upgrade editing software as well. Need to use in US and Italy.

Jim, you're giving us nothing to go on. Brand, model, ram etc...
I'd never edit with a laptop unless I was travelling. Thats what desktop machines are for...
MBP?
Daniel, them new i7 lappies are perfectly well suited for editing. In fact, the 15" MBP is my weapon of choice right now. In the office it's connected to a 24" screen.

I will get an i7, 8GB RAM, 750-1000 GB HD, 7200rpm, NVIDA graphics, 64 bit. ASUS has issues with the touch pad and poor customer service, Samsung touch pad too wide, otherwise I would get one. Don't want an Apple. Will probably get a Dell and upgrade Vegas for 64 bit compatibility. At home I will hook it to a 32" screen (which I now use for my PC). Have not decided whether to purchase in US or Europe.

USA will most likely be cheaper. Expect the price to be at least 20-25% higher in the old world.

I'm still willing to make a pitch for the Lenovo Thinkpad W520. great screen, firewire and top notch keyboard. Have had it for a year with no problems. The Optimus feature lets you choose between dedicated Nvidia GPU or the built-in 3000Hd GPU. The 2720 processor has a price tag for around $1500
That was then, this is now. New laptops can do anything a desktop can do. For obvious reasons, the rendering is best relegated to the desktop, but the only real issues is in price. For the most intensive editing a workstation would be best. However, a standard laptop can still be quite satisfactory if its properly equipped. That means a CUDA GPU (order the highest one you can afford) and as much RAM as the unit will support.
The rest of what you mentioned is secondary, but make sure you have sufficient ports that can connect to whatever camera(s) you will be using.

Krane,
The video card is an NVIDIA GeForce GT 555M, 3GB graphics with Optimus

That thing should do more than fine. Even with Adobe.

Agreed. From what I've heard, even many cards that aren't on the certified list still work wonderfully.
Finally got my order finalized, the processor will be an upgraded i7 2760QM, from Dell, XPS 17.

I'd have waited until April. Intel has announced the updated i5/7 for next month...
