Then they've told you all you need to know. Your only dilemma will be how to let him know. I'd just tell him you need to go it yourself on this one and that's that. And you don't have to tell the rest anything, they'll know what you had to do but will respect you even more for not saying anything more than he's "going his own way".

I envy you the crew you do have and their willingness to WORK with you.

    Good luck!

Yeah I actually made the decision a few hours ago.

I left this part out, but before we got started shooting my wife, son, and niece dropped by to see me and visit with my crew (we are all like family).

They were hanging out back in craft services, and he eluded to the fact he wanted them off the premises before we started shooting (this was after he's already made everybody wait for ages)

I went to set, and he said something about it again and I told him straight up that they were welcome to stay if they want to.. they are not going to be on set, just with crafty.. and would not make any noise.

He mumbled "F***" under his breath not realizing that I heard him. I immediately told him that I called the shots and that they were staying. Unfortunately, my wife is already at odds with him and is a feisty one who speaks her mind. She was about ready to give him a piece of hers.

Anyway, the crew members who were privy to that, were all offended by the attitude he caught because of them being there. My family comes first.. and if I want them on set (as long as they aren't in the way.. ) they will be.

He wants to work with nothing but industry pro's and sort of looks down on the rest of my crew who isn't, including me. I didn't go to film school. But I accomplished what many will never do.. including him, which is to organize a feature film on their own. Much less TWO!

Dude... get rid of him already. It's just going to get worse if you wait any longer. He's ruining your baby... you've put countless hours into it and YOU can stop him from messing everything up in just one phone call.

I might have told him at that point he was through. But it's likely best done privately.

Yes, I would have called him on that, then and there. He was out of line. Hard to credit that anyone would complain about the boss's family being at work! Unbelievable!

I would have pulled him up, right there in front of everyone. Guy needs a lesson in manners, for a start!

Perhaps that's the problem. It's more difficult to part ways with someone you go way back with.

I'd be inclined to send the guy packing, regardless. People know where they stand with me, some like that. If he needs to be let go diplomatically, you could shift the blame somewhere else to protect his ego.

"Look, it's now obvious that this isn't the right project for you. I'd be doing you, myself and everyone else a disservice by allowing these unacceptable conditions to persist. So please Fcuk off now." Then head butt him as hard as you can.

I had issues with him then too..

I just wasn't as vocal about it because I didn't know any better at the time.

All my actors came to me at some point distraught at how he talked down to them (he was directing then) and how they felt like he was more concerned with the technical stuff than the creative part (he was, and still is)

My main crew member who was threatening to leave said that he wanted to drop several times during EXIT 101 because of it, but he was dedicated to me.. so he just worked through it.

this was the straw that broke the camel's back. If I knew what I know now, he would have never been involved at all.

He has completely different motives. I stupidly agreed to "partner" with him on EXIT 101 even though I did 90% of the editing, all the promotions, all the organizing.. everything else. He wanted to be "involved" in the actual decision making, but none of the work to come to those decisions. Even then, when he had them to make.. it took so long for him to make up his mind I had to just decide for him.

I constantly hear people say they've heard my name come up in conversation between film makers around here. Why? because I've built a good reputation for myself by being respectful to everyone of every level of talent. I don't berate people who are lesser on the chain, and I work with people as much as I can. I get compliments from actors all the time about how we are one of the better indie productions going right now, because we actually follow up with our promises. He has 0 to do with any of that, and not having him around is not going to hurt the production in any form.

A weight has actually been lifted. I'm not going to discredit him as a film maker because I know what he's capable of, but our styles are just too different to make this work cohesively this time around. On EXIT 101 I shut my mouth and let alot go, just so I could learn.. not happening this time.

Good on you Az... You did what was best for yourself, and your team. If anything your crew will look up to you even more.

Good luck with your future shooting. I think you should share some of your screenshots... I'd be interested to see what kind of cinematic look you're getting out of the GH2...

That would be a tough call to make, but it sounds like you made the right decision. I personally would not want to work with someone who is so disrespectful and negative.

The "new" camera dept did some lighting tests and stuff tonight to see if we are capable of doing this without him.

We were there from 5pm to about 930pm.. about 5 hrs..

We got a bunch of B roll shot before it got dark on slider/jib and then we did 3 setups.

In less than half the time it took..

    Here are the results..

Those look fine to me. Here's to your project moving forward in a more civilized manor.

Thanks! I actually prefer what we did. It will look even better with makeup, and the actual actors in the shot.

None of those shots impress me much.

Maybe post some shots with him being in charge of lighting - perhaps you DO need him after all???

This looks like an under-lit & rather slap-happy effort.

Depending on the look he wants, maybe not!

My favourite one is the back lit one:

Thanks drape. We might not be "as good" as the other guy, but we will be without the drama. Besides these were just tests.

I had much more fun doing this than I did the other night, no stress, no tension..

    Here's the other guy's work..

    1) What makes you think you're "not as good" as the other guy? Seems nice so far. It's simply not the same style of lights use, but it's fine though. The other guy seems to use the available light or make people believe like he did so, but it's a different approach, depending on what you intended...
    2) That, is just priceless then!

    Just going off Mal's comment.

These scenes are in a abandoned haunted house, the only "light sources" are candles, the outside moonlight, and whatever "portable" light source our investigators have with them.. which is going to be very minor lights. Its intentionally dark, with blue hint to give you the impression that its night time inside a dark dank area. I wanted to use alot more blue to do that. To me what we've done is closer to the "Hatchet" style I was mentioning earlier that you posted some screen caps of. But that's just me.

I think it's a good thing that you didn't use more blue, Az. Blue is fine for day-for-night in exterior shots, because everything is supposed to be lit by moonlight, which is predominantly bluish. But if you're inside a room, even a drab one, the colours of the room's walls will give their own cast to the light. If the room's walls and ceiling and furnishings have any detectable colour of their own, a feint hint of those colours will be present in the lighting.

Unless the room is all-blue, you don't really need too much blue tint in the shots, even if it is night outside.

I didn't mean I want to use "more blue" in the tests.. I meant, I wanted to use more blue in the stuff the other guy shot.

All of the walls in these rooms are brown. They all have these wooden slats. As always all suggestions are welcome.

    Okay, I see.

The only thing the other guy did a bit better than you to put more lighting on the background. It establishes the location of the shot a bit better. Yet even though there's light on the slats in the BG, it still looks like night, because the light is fairly directional.

I know I don't have to tell you that in film, the portrayal of dark paradoxically requires light.
