The older folks here might still remember push-pull lenses. The had only one ring that was dealing with focus and zoom the same time. With a bit practice, they were pretty simple to use.

If you don't zoom while shooting, they are OK.
I have a 200-400 push-pull zoom, and it's virtually impossible to get a smooth zoom movement with it (smooth enough for recording on video, I mean...)
