Default No IS on the new Canon 24-70mm F2.8

    WTF Canon!

    http://www.dpreview.com/news/2012/02...S_28mm_f2p8_IS

London, UK, 7th February 2012 – Canon today adds to its world-famous EF lens series with the launch of three new lenses for photography professionals and enthusiasts. The new EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM professional zoom lens is an update to the popular EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM, while the new EF 24mm f/2.8 IS USM and EF 28mm f/2.8 IS USM are the world's first1 wide-angle prime lenses to feature optical Image Stabilizer (IS) technology. All three provide the highest levels of performance for modern digital photographers, combining premium image quality with durable, userfriendly designs.

EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM: the ultra-high performance standard zoom

The new EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM features completely redesigned optics to provide outstanding clarity, image quality and durability. A compact design makes it ideal for carrying on every shoot, and a range of optical enhancements provide improved performance – capturing greater detail across the frame while reducing distortion throughout the entire zoom range, particularly at the maximum 70mm focal length.

With a redesigned optical system that includes two Ultra-low Dispersion (UD) and one Super UD aspheric elements to minimise chromatic aberration and colour blurring, the lens delivers consistently sharp, high-contrast images. Each lens element also features Canon's optimised Super Spectra coatings to reduce ghosting and flare and ensure excellent colour balance. Additionally, a fluorine coating minimises the amount of dust, dirt and fingerprints that adhere to the front and rear of the lens, helping to maintain superior image quality.

The EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM also enables photographers to capture their subjects up close, with a minimum focusing distance of 0.38m at all focal lengths throughout the zoom range. A ring-type Ultrasonic Motor (USM) works in combination with a highperformance CPU and advanced AF algorithms to ensure accurate, silent and ultraresponsive autofocus. For those who prefer to maintain full control in every shot, fulltime manual focusing allows photographers to precisely tweak or alter the focus of their shot at any time, even when AF is engaged.

Maybe IS would have reduced the optical quality, something Canon wouldn't want to do in an L-series lens?

I know for certain that Tamron's non-IS 17-50mm/2.8 is sharper then the IS version. I chose sharpness over IS when I bought mine.

Maybe it would have been the same with Canon?

IS is there in the existing L-lens. I'm sure Canon has the technology to make the lens with IS.

Sorry Tak, i remember mentioning a looong time ago about how you were waiting for this lens. But arent you shooting all crop cams?? And dont u have the 17-55mm lens which is much better fit for crop??

    18-55mm (54-165mm with 3X) is okay.. but 24-70mm (72-210mm) is even better.

Do you mean there is a 24-70/2.8 L-series lens with IS? (Couldn't find one...)
Or just some other L-lenses with IS?

I'd say it's extremely hard to design a top-quality* wide-to-tele zoom lens with a constant 2.8 aperture - and adding the optical components needed for IS would complicate the design even more...

(* Which my Tamron 17-50/2.8 certainly is not... but just good enough for my needs. )

no... there're many L-lens. If there is already a 24-70mm F2.8L with IS, there won't be this entire thread.

I have Canon 70-200mm F2.8L with two modes of IS on it.

    I'd say it's easier to design a 70-200 than a 24-70...

PS. Edited #6 as you were posting...

my Canon 18-55mm F2.8 also has IS.

Is it just not easy to add IS to 24-70mm range?

    I guess you mean the 17-55mm/2.8 ?

    But, it's a cropped-sensor lens.

I'd say making a 24-70/2.8 for full frame, and in L-series quality is much, much harder... and that is the only reason I can assume as to why it has no IS.

It doesn't matter. Canon can always come up a version and revise it later making mark II or mark III. In the same press release, Canon brag about "Introducing the world's first wide-angle primes with IS". I think they have the technology and capacity to make it. But they choose not to do it.

    Probably for cost reasons.

I don't say it's impossible, but it would probably cost too much - maybe it would need many more aspheric surfaces, and several esoteric low-dispersion glasses etc. to keep the L-quality? Would you pay, say, $3,000 or 4,000 for such a lens?

PS: A wide prime is much easier to design than a wide-to-tele zoom.

You really think Canon will worry they make something that is so expensive no one would buy? ???!?!?!

    I paid $2400 for the 70-200mm F2.8L. Ans what about the new C300? It's $20,000!

I guess not... this particular IS-lacking L-lens is due to sell at a whopping 2.579 EUR.... that's about 3.3 kUSD... At those prices, aren't you better of buying and XF300 or something similar for video?

FYI: Tamron announced a fullframe 24-70mm f2.8 (with IS) last week too. You're probably better off checking that new lens for your purpose.

Just saw these announcements on a Dutch tech-site.

    Like Lunch said,

"London, UK, 7th February 2013 – Canon today adds to its world-famous EF L series lenses the EF 24-70mm f/2.8L MkIII IS USM now with optical Image Stabilizer (IS) technology for photography professionals and enthusiasts"

Oh, yes - LOL! And, sorry, by the way, for underestimating Canon's L-class pricing - looks like my Firefox left out a zero or something...

We'll see if they come up with an IS one in 2013 - it is indeed very possible... they do have to roll out new models to keep business going!
