Default If only I had my camera

Outside Costco today. I just happened to notice a young couple, sitting on a wall, eating burgers. Suddenly a kite swooped down, snatched the guy's burger and flew off with it in its clutches.

A real WTF? moment. Even if I carried a camera phone, I doubt I'd have caught that. It was over pretty quick. The looks on their faces were priceless.

The Korova milkbar sold milk-plus, milk plus vellocet or synthemesc or drencrom, which is what we were drinking. This would sharpen you up and make you ready for a bit of the old ultra-violence.

Oh yes and not just in Japan. Kites are found in many countries and have a reputation as feisty opportunists.

They're quite common here and have been known to raid expressway-service areas where the pickings are good from people dinning outside. I guess it's an easy meal, beats hunting rodents and, probably, tastes better.

Seagulls are the food-snatchers par excellence here in Finland. Sometimes from the table, or even the hands of the person eating.

You should see what happens every summer at one ice cream kiosk I frequent - a kid drops a ball of ice cream on the ground, and within 5 seconds it's like Hitchcock's "Birds" all around...

I saw a crow once sitting on an outdoor table and pulling napkins out of a napkin dispenser for 10 minutes.

You know what you have to do then, Huey. Set up another opportunity for the bird, and have your camera set up and ready. Kites are somewhat territorial. He might have a nest nearby, so he might be back.

There's a local kookaburra that regularly sits on my back-yard clothes line. I've got some nice footage of him. Not too many years ago, you'd have to go way out bush to see one.

LOL that's nothing... ever fight a 1 1/2 meter stork off for your lunch before? I have! LOL that bird has more rights than the local people of Uganda!

They’re called Marabou Storks, left-overs from pre-history. Quite large, they stand over a meter tall, some over a meter and a half with a wingspan exceeding 3 meters. Here in Uganda they are a protected species not because their existence is threatened, but because they are so essential to Ugandan life.

Scavengers of the most intense sort, Marabou storks, Leptoptilos crumeniferus, are found throughout sub-Saharan African. But in Uganda they have achieved official status. Locals call them the Ugandan garbage collection system. Anyone killing one can go to jail because they are so important to keeping the countryside and city streets cleaned up.

Ugly Buggers... I tossed one of myself in so you can see I'm not kidding about their size! They are everywhere... especially in the countless fishing villages, looking to feed on the fish scraps being turned into sauces... mmmmm

Kites, kitties, same kind of thing. Both are hunters.

I think our cat would make a fine raptor if she could fly.

That would have been pretty cool. You need to just mount a helmet cam and keep it going all day, this even beats keeping a camera in the vehicle at all times. It is amazing what we see when we do not have our gear in hand.

mating pair of bald eagles flew over my car last winter. I was shooting a scene for the hv20.com february film contest however the only lens I had at the time was a Sigma 28mm. by the time i realized what was going on they had flown up into a tree about 150 yards away. i took some snap shots, but 28mm...thats too far. pictures did not turn out very well. My scene where I wished I had a camera rolling:
A snake crossed the road in front of the car in front of mine.
As the car was about to run over the snake it stood up.
I am convinced two thirds of it was vertical with the head at the same height as the head of the driver. The car passed, the snake lowered itself and crossed in front of me.
If the guy had his window open he could have been bitten.
