Default Zoom H1 Firmware Update Version 2.0 Just Released!

Hey guys, noticed that one of the 3 Zoom H1 recorders I received a couple weeks ago from B&H had only ver. 1.2 firmware while the other 2 had ver. 1.10, which was the latest until just this week (well it wasn't there last week with no firmware offered up till now anyway). Here is, AFAIK, the first upgrade to the zoom H1 firmware that has ever been released.

    Enjoy!

    H1 Handy Recorder Firmware Update

    http://www.samsontech.com/support/zoom/products/h1/

Version 2.0 (Replaces previous version 1.10 and 1.2)
Released as following function update and bug fix in December 2011
1: Added USB Audio Interface Function
2: The starting time is shortened
3: Added the File Recovery function that restores broken data caused by power-off while recording.
4: Skip date/time setting menu after 10 seconds with no operation
5: H1 freezes at the end of a recording in MP3 format in rare cases
6: Some PC software can not recognize the mark created by H1

    1) Can't certainly beat the Tascam DR-05. It's quick to open and get ready to record.
    2) That's a nice thing, other than this, on long recording you'd loose all the audio track? That's bad. Already happened with a defective SD card once with the H2.
    3) You have to set it for each recording session?

    3. No, only when you set up the H1 after unwrapping, just like any other camera, recorder or whatever.

    Thanks for the news, HD.

Less than 2 seconds to load now! (Maybe 1.5 seconds or so)

LOL Oh God No... but if you wanted to neglect setting it before you would have to press some buttons to get it to go away, now it just disappears after 10 seconds automaticly.

So it's not a big deal to categorize it as a "firmware-update"?
I wouldn't say it'd be enough to convince me to choose that device over another brand/model because of that.

So it's pretty much the same as the DR-05 (I've been surprised as hell the first time, being used with the H2!)

Actually this is a big deal for those who already own these devices and have been experiencing the few bugs mentioned in the "fix"... the main "update" would be the USB Audio Interface Function is now added, something noticeably missing from the H1 that the H2 had.

Only if the H1 has been without power for an extended time (I don't know exactly).

It will keep the clock running during a normal battery change, though.

I just updated my H1 to v. 2.0, no problems, only took a couple of minutes.

I also made a test recording, including some hum and preamp hiss, to test Audacity's noise removal, you can find it here:

Noise removal with Audacity works !

Good news indeed, updated it... but my recorder needs batteries charged before I can really play with it. Not to mention, I'm kinda under the influence... so playing with my equipment isn't a good idea right now.

It's important that your batteries contain enough juice to manage the entire update - with a marginal charge, if power cuts off during the update, the recorder might get bricked...

(Your own "juice" content is of little importance here... )

Thanks HD for this. I could not live without my H1. Just recorded a concert off the board with it and the quality is great.

No problem, however I didn't write the thing, I just ran across it fulfilling my own needs, share the wealth with the forum! I also emailed Emm over at Cheesycam after posting here and he immediately put it up on his blog for the rest of the DSLR crowd

Worked out perfectly. Thanks again HD.

The additional use as an USB audio interface is great.

LOL... for the rest of you who just can't be bothered to read instructions: (no... that's NOT me! LOL)

In a nutshell, download the zip file, unpack, use a freshly formatted card to place the bin file on the card’s main folder (not in the stereo folder’s sub-menu), make sure you have a fresh battery, then while holding down play/pause turn the recorder on, it should show the previous version number and then the new version number, press record once, then it will ask you to confirm upgrade, press rec again to start the upgrade, 20 seconds later says upgrade complete. Turn off the recorder, turn the recorder back on while holding trash bin to reformat the card (erasing the bin file), press rec to format card, then turn off recorder, turn back on normally and at startup you should see new ver 2.00 number and you’re ready to record!

People over at Cheesycam are now reporting errors when trying to upgrade using Linux based PCs... so go find a Windows PC... or perhaps even a Mac might do

You don't even have to format your card. I simply dragged the update file to the card's root folder. Worked like a charm.

    No problems with a Mac.

I didn't even format the card, just put the update file in the main folder. Afterwards, I just erased that one file.

Well, it will do no harm even though it's there, you need those special key presses to activate it...

What speed microSD card is used by the H1? I can't find it in the manual and I want to upgrade to an 8GB card.

Makes no difference.. I'm using one of these class 4 16GB microSDHC Memory Cards from SanDisk ($16.99 USD) in each of my 3 zoom H1's with no problems... almost 24 hours space per card at 16-bit/48kHz
