I hate lending stuff to anyone. I can't imagine lending to someone I don't know personally. I lent my father a pair of pliers once. Haven't seen them in 3 months.

I might be materialist, but as I already said: I prefer to lose, break or damage my own stuff myself than living with the fact that somebody else did it instead.
You pay and you break, you're bad. You pay and somebody else break, you're bad because he probably won't (99%) pay for it.
I'd be pissed if I'm shooting something and that I accidentally damage my camera, but I'd be even more if someone else does it, knowing that they're know as good as I am with a camera in hand.
I DO IT BECAUSE I CAN. I CAN BECAUSE I WANT TO. I WANT TO BECAUSE YOU SAID I COULDN'T.

    That really sucks Huey :/

I've tried renting lighting gear to this rap group in Beijing, but they realized they couldn't shoot all the music videos they could in just a week. In foresight, I doubt they could've setup a single light anyway, haha.

Though I have been on the receiving end of a very generous lender. I had a 5DM2, 24-105 L, 430EX II, and a shoulder bag for half a year. Shot a lot with it all for free

Dan, the one time (a long time ago) that I did lend a friend my HV and Rode the same thing happened. Most feasible explanation for broken bands is crushing or dropping the Rode. And likewise the mics is fine but that ended my lending days.

It's that paranoia that keeps my gear in good working order. If people don't have their own gear they are usually clueless and seldom know how to use the tech anyway.

The Azden kit costs about $300 plus all the bits and the bag itself. About $350~400. I guess. The ATR3350 is cheap, but I can't get them here so I had to have my brother send it from the US. There was a rake of stuff in there that I'd gathered over time, so there's the hassle of putting a new mic bag together now. I've been waiting for over a week to use the mics to test some IC recorders for a job next month, so I guess I'll have to buy a mic now just for that.

My friend called last night to say the bag hadn't shown up at his place yet. So that's two days, with a second to none mail and parcel service, it's very unusual for deliveries to not arrive next day. He's also accepted responsibility, I knew he would.
The Korova milkbar sold milk-plus, milk plus vellocet or synthemesc or drencrom, which is what we were drinking. This would sharpen you up and make you ready for a bit of the old ultra-violence.

That's a good thing, especially since you've said:

Damn... that sucks... and your friend is going to pay for it all... sucks even more. So the dude was leaving town and he figured, hey I'm not coming back here ever again, I don't even know the guy, he can't track me down, I'm leaving with this gear...

BUT, he took the gear even after saying he

    Strange isn't it?
So was he lying about not getting a usable result from it, or was he lying when he claimed that hotmail had my emails sent to junk?Because he sure was lying when he said he'd mail the bag on Tuesday.

Of course he could've lost the bag, people leave stuff on trains all the time. Or maybe he did take the gear on the shoot and it worked so well that he decided to keep it. I guess we'll never know. Whatever the truth is, the outcome remains the same for my friend and I.

I would not loan my 5dmk2 and my 24-70mm L lens to ANYONE. Reading this thread just solidified that notion. Even though I would be happy to help someone, I would operate the gear myself if I had the time, if not...sorry no tiki no washy.

As I said, when you pay for something (especially video gear which is expensive) you don't want somebody else to break it or damage it while playing with your gear.

My guess would be losing the bag was what happened, and he didn't know how to "own up" to that and now is in so deep he can't stop lying.

I'm very sorry to hear about that happening to you. Hope you're able to get something to handle that upcoming gig.

    Thanks, Bruce.

I'll cobble something together, no choice.

What really stings is that my friend and I have over 100 years of combined life experience. This just shouldn't have happened. I guess you're never too old to learn

50/50 split on the cost of some new gear then?

But seriously, yours is a very difficult situation and I hope your primary friendship is intact.

Hey this may be weird or unusual whatever.. but cant we, the forum members here do a little donation to help Huey soothe his wounds?

I can imagine your emotional state Huey. Sometimes there is a bond between you and your equipment. Indeed, they may be used but you understand each other, and sometimes in certain situations its emotional stress to be that separated knowing you have to spend precious time to put all these nuts and bolts and the kit together again.

If you have the guys name/email, you could try tracking him down on social networking sites. I can honestly say I would not be taking this as well as you are.

Booker Woodford, his name is Booker Woodford. Mrs HnR were planning to visit the UK, this new year. You never know, I might be able to catch up with Mr Woodford. I'd like that very much, very much indeed.

I don't lend a dammed thing out anymore to ANYONE.

Last time I lent out something was a 5 ton chain hoist. He needed it for "a couple days". I finally had to corner him about 6 months later to get it back.... and it came back all scraped to crap with a rusted chain. It's clear it had been kicking around on a garage floor for a few months.

Sounds like your guy. Is it coincidence that he's blabbing on about an interview with a tsunami victim in his wall posts? I think not.

I've lent some stuff out to friends before.

Although I've yet to have a terrible experience, it never comes back the way YOU packed it, and I think that's what bothers me.

Always little things, like lens caps switched around, minute stuff that bothers me.

I lend/rent lenses to friends that I know would cover them if they lalalalaed them up, but even though I can vouch for them being stand up dudes, I never feel fully comfortable with it.

That said, because of letting one friend borrow a few hundreds worth of lenses, I can now borrow any of his thousands worth of L Lenses

I don't think I'll be lending anything out for free this year though, even if it's just $20 or some small amount, I feel like people take it more seriously if they pay something.

If you ever lend something out, get a written receipt...
