Cool < $100 Carbon Fiber Booms? Lux Falcon BOOM!

So we were talking about these a bit in another thread here:
    http://www.hv20.com/showthread.php?4...21052&posted=1

But I thought I'd "move" the thread over here so as not to hijack the other one.

Basically there's a new genuine carbon fiber boom pole out there that is apparently the cheapest carbon fiber boom pole available by a pretty huge margin. The 9 foot version is $99 bucks and the 12 foot one is $135 I believe.

The company is called Lux-Cinema and as it turns out the guy behind it is actually a forum member (only a few posts but he's been a member for a while).

So anyways, I can't personally vouch for these products because I haven't used one yet but I just ordered one so I guess I will be able to soon. It seems to be decent enough quality for the price, I mean the mechanics behind it aren't all that complex are they? Anywho, the website is below:

    http://www.lux-cinema.com/the-lux-falcon-boom.html

And right now I guess they are only offered on his ebay page:

EDIT: Currently there is a glitch on that ebay link above. You can see the listings here:
    http://www.ebay.com/itm/220915683985...84.m1555.l2649
    http://www.ebay.com/itm/220915683868...84.m1555.l2649

Thanks Randy! I'm the guy behind these booms. I was about to start a topic but I'll just chime in here. Basically I'm just a low budget filmmaker like a lot of the rest of you. Long time reader here, proud vixia hf100 owner etc. I'm very active on cinema5d and dvxuser.

This all started because I wanted a carbon fiber boom but couldn't afford anything available. I essentially had to choose between using a painters pole and an aluminum boom pole like the rode boom which is $150 and you might as well just stick with the painter's pole for that price since it's almost exactly the same thing.

So I chose a third option and decided to come up with an affordable carbon fiber boom pole for myself and others. There's a lot more poor filmmakers than there are pro filmmakers so it seems like there is a big need for something like this. It took me 8 months but I am now selling my first batch and hopefully I'll be able to sell more after that.

I'm here to answer any questions and I am NOT here to come off as pushy or force my product upon you. It's not for everyone. There are higher quality booms out there, but I've been using one of the early prototypes for months and it has surpassed my expectations. The thing is so light that it can be underwhelming at first (we often associate weight with quality) but then you realize how much of an advantage that is.

Jackson, I'll be looking to spend some cash on my sound setup next year... and I need a decent boompole. I've got a painters pole, but its too heavy for my partner to use for long periods of time... so I'll definitely be buying one of these.

I do have a question though, just how friendly is the price point + postage for those outside the US? I'm in Australia, I'd love to get one of these... but $60+ extra on postage is a downer for me. If the product is good, I'll pay the postage... but I'll wait to hear some reviews.
OP, do give us your review when it comes in, yeah?

What is the collapsed length of each pole and can you describe the attachment end?

I'm wondering the same. I'd like to buy one in the early 2012.

Also, the previous link doesn't work due to "legal restrictions in some countries" so I'm wondering is you'd ship to Québec, Canada too!

Just bought the 12 foot model.

Thanks Jim! I assume you found the answers to your questions then? The attachment end is standard 5/8ths which will fit many/most shockmounts but if your shockmount is the 3/8ths type you will need to get an adapter. I'm looking for a supplier to get those in bulk so I can provide them but that make take a while.

The collapsed length is around 3 feet 6 inches for the 9 foot model and an inch and a half longer for the 12 foot version. A lot more portable than a paint pole in short

As for shipping outside of the US, I am trying to find the best method to do that and for that reason right now I had outside of the US shipping disabled on ebay. Now that I see there is a demand I'll make sure to change that as soon as I work out the best shipping method.

Can we know more background information? I'm just interested to know what experience you've had on set... are you a filmmaker that needed a good boom, or were you doing production sound? How did the Falcon come together? Did you make the prototypes by hand? How quickly did it come together?

I only ask these because I am now fascinated with how products like these are built and eventually take off like a jet. I had the opportunity to work with our own forum member, Darthpaully, on the HVFF - a professional follow focus for the Canon HV series cameras, and it was a very fun process and also really cool to see how it just kept on growing and how it was distributed worldwide.

Thanks, I'd like to buy one, but as Daniel said, as long as the shipping doesn't kill it.

Edit: 19.99$ shipping would be more than ideal. It's still marked as only shipping in the US, but if you keep this price, I'll get one for sure!

Also, any chance to get some kind of discount for hv20.com forum members/supporters? =)

That would be great! However I can't afford it at the moment and I hope the price won't go up later when I can

If the price remains the same for the shorter version, and if everything goes as planned, I should be able to get it on December 29th (next pay!)
Let's see how things are going...and I'll wait on Jackson's answer about shipping rates.
Thanks, it really looks like an interesting and affordable option.

Hey drape, are you going to drill a hole and feed the XLR cable through it? That would make it one badass pole. I doubt the wire will add much weight. It's super light weight as it is.

Only problem I'd see with a pole with cable inside would be that the wire will make some noise indise, and will probably being picked up by the mic (even with a decent shockmount).
About the weight, it's pretty much the same "inside" or "around" the pole with some tiewraps or velcros. Huey said it doesn't change much one or the other.
That being said, I'm actually trying something for mine while I'm waiting on some money to get a real one. I'll post details in the thread (don't want to hijack this one with it).

Jackson. I'm also interested (in a 12ft). If you can pack it to under 42" - maybe disassemble the bottom section - postage to Australia by ordinary airmail would be around $30.

From what I've calculated, with approx dimensions, the shipping should be pretty much similar to ship to canada:
    Shipping.PNG
Anything up to 30$ and I'd be happy to get one in less than 2 weeks. Just let us know.
Also, if you don't want to offer international shipping directly on ebay, would you be up to offer it here for us?

Only problem I'd see with a pole with cable inside would be that the wire will make some noise indise,
Another issue is that cable breakage has been reported.

The noise is no problem. I have a cabled boom, and I haven't heard anything yet. My choice to go for cable inside was that I oftentimes have to shoot on the run. The cable is pretty convenient for me - quick setup, no fooling around with velcro.
I got the B&H kit (the Pearstone shock mount is a bit cheesy) with the NTG2. Part of the kit was a bag that fits the boom with mic attached. All I have to do is to take the kit out of the bag, run a cable from the pole to the cam, and - boom - I'm set to boom.

Good points. I'll have to determine if it really worth the extra money invested then.

You are a filmmaker. You might have more time for setting up your stuff than I normally have.

That's true. I always found more practical not to have the cable around the pole for handling it, but it's not a big issue.

Yep, so far I think it would be ok.

    Hey, that's discrimination! (j/k)

Not bad! I know dealers that would have ripped the same money out of me domestically.

Sorry, I have a pole already
