Default How to export Video from a HV20 (MiniDV tapes) to my laptop?

I have a Canon HV20 camera with some video footage. I don't have a firewire port on my PC. How can I export my video file on to my computer.

I'm hoping to upload my video to YouTube.

I'm really struggling and you guys are my last hope. Thanks in advance for all your help

You can't, without a firewire port.

Do you have a slot for an expansion card? If so, you can get a FW adapter - others here will tell you exactly what you need - or, you can just read the stickies and other posts, this has been answered many, many times.

If you have no way of adding a FW port, then you need to do the "capture" (not "export") on another computer that does have a FW port.

It's already been discussed to death on other threads, but the answer is simple: without a firewire port OR a PCMCIA slot to add an external card WITH a firewire port, you simply CAN'T do it.
Best option then would be to transfer the video on a desktop with one, on an external HDD then copy them to your laptop.
    There's no miracle solutions unfortunately.

Edit: Mickey has been quicker than me!

Guys, wouldn't a cheap capture card work? Like a Dazzle or Pinnacle box? If it's just for youtube those should be fine. Dazzle Is pretty much plug and play.

Do they fit in a laptop?

A capture box to USB would work, but if the OP needs to transfer HD material, it won't...

That's for sure, but as Almo stated:

    Greetings all.
My first post in this very informative forum. Apologies for asking so many questions in one go.
I have been shooting (PAL format) with my HV20 for a sometime and now am about to transfer my videos from tape to my PC (Windows 7) for editing with Premiere Elements 10. At the moment my intention is to capture the video on to my PC to archive it so that I can edit it in the future when I have the time. I don't want to leave the videos on the tapes, in case my HV20 packs up.

    I have the following questions:
A How do I find out the settings that I used for taking the videos. I suppose I would need to know this to set PE 10 for capturing.
B Is there any advantage in capturing the whole tape in smaller parts rather than in one big file. One file would be perhaps better for archiving.
C How do I find out if there were dropped frames during capture with PE10
D I have used a program called DV Data to display date/time stamp on videos in the past but this program doesn't work with HDV. What program are you guys using to display the date/time stamp on your videos. For videos of kids, I find it very important to be able to display the date on video.

    Best regards

    Good day all,
Will appreciate if any of the experts will take time to reply to my queries above.

    Cheers

A Doesn't matter. Your software will normally tell you if you set the wrong capturing settings.
B Doesn't matter. HDV is split in clips on capturing in any way.
C You'll se it when you watch your footage. Check the software preferences if you can switch on a warning message.
D Dunno. I can do that in my editing software if I really ever needed it. You can do it manually though as a text lay over (needed date and time are in the metadata).

    Many thanks for your reply.
I have just captured a video from tape using HDV Split which doesn't ask for any settings. I then used MediaInfo which gave me all the particulars of the clip. Great programs indeed.
ON the matter of date/time display in clips, I can't see this option in Premier Elements 10. Which editing software you use which allows you to do this?
I can't figure out as to why the mainstream editing programs like Adobe Premiere etc don't have this capability built into them.

    Cheers

About any professional software... Didn't catch the Premier Elements - sorry.
